RTÉ Libraries and Archives houses Ireland's largest collection of audio visual material. Along with hundreds of thousands of hours of radio and television programmes, RTÉ Libraries and Archives hold the state's most extensive collection of recorded music and photographic images in addition to large archives of paper records, including programme scripts, music scores and manuscripts. RTÉ catalogues and supporting documents are by themselves unrivalled records of Irish life in the twentieth century.

A Unique Record of Irish Life

The RTÉ Libraries and Archives maintain an audio-visual record of the major events and personalities of Irish history from the turn of the last century to the present day, in addition to managing individual media collections that are the most extensive of their kind.

RTÉ Sound Library's collection of commercial discs represents a large selection of the music listened to and produced by the people of Ireland in the 20th century. RTÉ Sound Archive's collection of traditional music is considered one of the finest of its kind.

The RTÉ Television Libraries and Archives' collection, dating from RTÉ's opening night on New Year's Eve 1961, has become Ireland's most important audio-visual collection. In addition, the archive curates newsreel and amateur recordings dating back to the 1890s.
