Lions Player Ratings

by Brendan Cole

  1. Andrew Sheridan – not much seen in the loose, one strong carry near the touchline aside, but the Lions loosehead did damage in the scrum at times. 6
  2. Matthew Rees – superb tackle on Ndungane was the high point and Rees showed up well generally before Ford replaced him. Crooked throwing did not prove as costly as in the second Test. 6.5
  3. Phil Vickery – Recovered to make a stand against ‘The Beast’ and shaded their keenly contested scrum battle. 6
  4. Simon Shaw – Again, some superb tight forward play; breaking up mauls, chasing and irritating, and getting in that little block. Yellow card was for an unnecessary play but overall, showed himself to be a class act. Deserved this. 8
  5. Paul O’Connell – Captain needed a big game and he got it. Somewhat plodding in the loose but the lineout, work-rate and turnovers were vital. 7.5
  6. Joe Worsley – Tackled hard and did his best to limit the Boks midfield. 6
  7. Martyn Williams – Important role for the Lions, adding little bursts of impetus at key junctures and making sure the Boks could never relax. 7.5
  8. Jamie Heaslip – Outstanding display. Hit it up hard all day and finally showed that capacity to make the game turning play in the red jersey with his set up for Williams’ first try. 8.5

  9. Mike Phillips – Tended to take on too much in the first half and gave up some turnovers. Lively and accurate for the most part though, and did well as an auxiliary centre too. 7
  10. Stephen Jones – Performed the fulcrum role perfectly. Nothing flash, but Jones took the ball flat and made good decisions all day. 7.5
  11. Shane Williams – Shaky start but that two try burst marked Williams class. Not much seen aside from that but who cares? 8
  12. Riki Flutey – Slightly greedy at times but overall, a superb outing. Set up for Williams try showed his instinctive talent and big hits in the middle were also key. 8.5
  13. Tommy Bowe – Stretched his legs at times but couldn’t quite connect to make the killer play. 6
  14. Ugo Monye – Brilliant intercept try sealed the deal for the Lions. Like Williams, generally quiet but again, did exactly what was needed. 7.
  15. Rob Kearney – Imperious start and his attitude and ability to shore up the back created a solid base for the Lions. Outjumped once or twice late on, and missed a key touch at the end of the first half. Overall, another excellent display. 8

Sub: Ross Ford: Did well when he came on, throwing accurately and looking for work in the pick and go area.6.5

Other subs not really on long enough to rate with the Lions in holding pattern mode once the majority came on. All filled the gaps well and John Hayes won a deserved Lions Test cap against one of the big three.

Shane Williams 8!!! Riki Flutey 8.5!! Are you mad? Were you watching the same game. Williams did nothing more than do what any international winger would do and score 2 tries that were laid on a plate for him by great play by others - 6 at the very most. And while Flutey played well again a 6 would suffice. And give Philips and Heaslip each a 9.

A brilliant lions performance. The Lions should have won all of the tests and would have ertainly won the first but for some dreadful referring decisions. Why were all of the referees from the Southern hemisphere??

paul O'Connell and Phil vickery deserved a higher rating than they received.

Thrilled for John Hayes, he was super and never conceded an inch to the Beast.

I think you are being ungenerous to Paul O'Connell His work rate was fantastic and one lineout catch was the best I have ever seen. Also John Hayes destroed the SA scrum when he came on. He certainly was on long enough to be rated and he deserved av ery high one! Up Munster!!

in my view they the lions won the previous test for sportmanship alone (which it is all about ? )so overall their the winners ,alan L.

what does Jamie Heaslip have to do to win man of the match? he made Shane Williams look good, without him theLIONS WERE SLOW.

Not sure how you don't credit Flutey with a very good performance? Williams finished two tries lots of other wingers might well have botched - did his job perfectly in my book.......would maybe agree that my Phillips rating is too low.

Refs all from neutral countries - i.e. either France, NZ or Oz. Dickinson was good on Saturday. Lawrence and Berdos were both awful throughout. I would have had no prob with Jonathan Kaplan (SA), Alain Rolland (Ire) and/or Nigel Owens (Wales) being involved, along with Dickinson.

up against a poor S.A. backline!when it mattered the boks were better. B.O.D. Kearney Heaslip & O Connell world class

I would agree with most of these ratings. O'Connell was good but didn't reach the heights he has with Munster and Ireland. Needs to work on ball carrying as he invariably takes ball from a standing start. Captaincy was superb I thought to raise the team from the first demoralising defeat and then the second to the third test victory. His assertive Johnson-esque communication with the referee was spot on! Saying that this was the only test that was refereed correctly with the possible exception of the penalty on Brussouw, although that was probably because he was borderline psychotic at that stage of the match getting involved in every incident. Same as you Brendan I thought that Kaplan would have been better than Berdos or Lawrence any day! Overall the series was a success but can't help feeling that they left at least one test after them! Bodes very well for Ireland though thought our players were the most consistent throughout. Deccie must be pretty happy with his first year in charge. Magners, Heineken, Grand Slam, Churchill, and greatest Lions rep since the war! Pretty nifty!

Tommy Bowe deserved an 8-he was outstanding. Rob Kearney positively brilliant-a 9.And where was Andy Powell? He would have taken care of a few of the South African bully boys.

I think Phillips is worth a point or more on your ratings Brendan. Pretty exceptional game overall for a 9 and then in midfield - big kick in the teeth to James Hook btw on that call. Great series but marred by in no particular order : a) truly awful refereeing in the first two games, particularly the second test. Unsurprisingly Laurence was the man in the middle in test 1 and the guy who welched the very straightforward call to red car SA 7 for gouging. Did the game no service whatsoever in this regard. Berdos had a bad game in test 2; players completely ignored him. Dickinson was fine in test 3. b) if you're a NH man, very uncharacteristic botched selection in the tight five for test 1 by lions management. That and the failure to get Vickery off the park after 15 minutes when it was clear that his oppo and the ref had him potted from distance before the game began. Probably cost them the match. c) again if you're a NH man, awful bad luck with injuries for the Lions, even before they got on the park, and particularly in test 2. Very few teams, never mind a scratch outfit, could wear five unplanned injury subs, especially to both props and both centres. d) whether your a saffa or NH, P. de V. e) whether you're a saffa or NH, those ludicrous armbands. In a country like SA, on the continent of Africa what do the rugby guys protest about ? A 2 week suspension which will have no actual impact on Bakkies' test availability anyway. Embarassing. Brilliant overall for Irish rugby - In particular Ferris (although in only two games), Kearney, Fitzgerald and Heaslip all stepped onto the stage properly and should provide both a spine and a cutting edge for us against any opposition. Bowe enhanced his reputation and demonstrated how he was badly ignored in the years prior to the Glorious '09. Earls will have taken an awful lot out of the tour. POC, DOC, DW, all emerged in credit. JH put yet another seal on an awesome career. Gordon D'Arcy...eh, not on long enough to rate. Did whatever was asked to him, no real opportunities. There is nothing more that can be said about Brian O'Driscoll. A Warrior, and truly world class. Makes you proud to be Irish to watch him play. The Irish player I would be most concerned about is Ronan O'Gara. He has it all to do to put himself back on the park mentally. Overall Lions will feel they left it behind them in test 1 and 2. Springboks will feel they bit what was in front of them when it mattered, and they did. No hard feelings.
