It's not often that Morning Ireland and Colm & Jim-Jim's Breakfast Show on 2FM are talking about the same thing at the same time, but it happened today .
We broadcast a simulcast with our sister station between 8.15 and 8.30am today, covering the death of Micheal Jackson. Morning Ireland presenter Richard Downes shared the job of interviewing our LA-based show business correspondent Steve Futterman with Jim-Jim Nugent and Lindy Clarke on 2FM .
The untimely death of Jackson is one of those events that becomes a "global moment" where a majority of the world's population is watching or listening to one event. Whether they are ephemeral, like the O.J. Simpson trial, or world-changing, like the first man on the moon, they do have the power to bring a diverse world together.
By linking up with 2FM on this story we tried to bring the listeners of both radio programmes in on the conversation.
Oh, and we also covered the heavy rock band AC/DC's concert coming up this weekend. I never thought I'd hear "Thunderstruck" or "Whole Lotta Rosie" coursing through the Morning Ireland studio speakers -- and who would have thought that mild-mannered RTÉ Political Correspondent David McCullagh could be such a fan? More surprising still was that he wasn't afraid to hide the fact.
You can listen to the report here.
Morning Ireland will still cover major news and serious news but sometimes the news agenda widens to allow for coverage of the things that we talk about at the water cooler.
