The X Factor - Switching Channels!

So cards on the table here guys – I’m for team Strictly! I watch the ‘X Factor’ when the dancing stops but this weekend I decided to embrace all things ‘X Factor’ and I certainly picked the week to do it!

It had pretty much everything a weekend entertainment show should have – great performances (Olly, Jamie), dodgy performances (Miss Frank, Lloyd), wardrobe malfunctions (Whitney!), tears (Cheryl), bad hair (take a bow Dannii) not to mention two confused Irish teenagers wearing red plastic suits pretending to be talented.

Sorry lads but somebody should have put you right years ago and said ‘You’re great lads and a real laugh singing and dancing for Auntie Mary but have you ever considered a career in IT?’ Clearly they are grand boys but the journey they are on is now out of their control and Louis’. The audience will decide when they go and while it has been amusing to watch for the last two weeks it’s only a matter of time before it turns ugly. Last night we had a taste of that when Cheryl name-checked the pair when Rikki got the boot. So here’s hoping for their own sakes that they only get one more shot at performing before they gracefully retire.

So who impressed? I loved Jamie – he gave a really understated performance for Diva week and made a brave song choice. Olly was also fantastic and demonstrated real stage presence while Stacey I thought did well with a song she didn’t know. At the other end of the scale it has to be said that Miss Frank were a train-wreck. At least two of them aren’t accomplished singers and I have my doubts about the third. I know Louis was away this week but the girls looked under-rehearsed and who is styling them? They looked like they got dressed in the dark. The really have something to prove next week.

Lloyd also has ground to regain. Bland is the only word to describe his performance – a bad song choice and generally he failed to make an impact on me. As for Rikki, his performance when he was fighting for survival was very poor. Cheryl said 'Flying Without Wings' was his favourite song but he certainly did not do it justice.

So enough about the contestants and back to the real stars of the show – the judging panel! I can’t believe I am saying this but Louis was badly missed and the dynamic was all wrong over the weekend so I look forward to seeing him back next week.

For me there is really only one reason to watch the show and that is Simon – he is great TV. He is arrogant, vain and opinionated but absolutely compelling to watch. The acts want his approval, the audience want him to be controversial, Dermot wants him to laugh at his jokes and the rest of the panel are torn between wanting to be his best friend and beating him. It’s his show and he knows it. He was on top form on Saturday telling Lloyd ‘he is lucky he is cute’ as he ain’t got much else going on and after a particularly good performance from Olly saying ‘that’s why all the contestants want to be mentored by me’!

Finally a word about the two guest acts last night. Cheryl’s performance was slick but she has great choreography to thank for that! She did very well but I have to say this half singing, half pre-recorded thing is a bit of a cop-out. Either sing or don’t! Whitney apparently also sang to some pre-recorded vocals so Cheryl was in good company. Whitney did well (certainly it was a lot better than her Good Morning America performance at the beginning of September). I have to say however I am beginning to feel sorry for Dermot after two weeks of stressful Q & As with erratic stars at the end of the guest spots. How about giving him a break and bringing on an old pro like Tony Bennett? Next week it Big Band week!

Comments:

Week 2 in the soap opera that is X Factor! There was a huge jump forward in the quality of the acts. Except for one or two of them, the competition is fierce and I'm changing my mind each week on the winner. Jamie was exceptional this week and I thought Lucie really came out of her shell. Still don't like Danyl and I really hope he gets the boot. Cocky and over-rated. Agreed with Simon on the song choices though. He gets it right almost every time but Cheryl and Danni are not getting the most from their acts because of bad song choices. Rachel didn't deserve to be in the bottom two and while the twins are funny and entertaining (if only for the car-crash that is their performances) they have no talent. It's time for common sense to prevail here before a genuinely good act gets voted out. Big band week will suit the bigger voices next week. On a side note, I thought Cheryl's performance was top class. Agree with Bree on the half singing though but the coreography was exceptional. And did anyone else think that Whitney seemed a little 'odd' when talking to Dermot? First Robbie, then Whitney.... Must be something in the air ;)

John and Edward are the stars of the show. The talking bit in "Oops I did It Again" was inspired and although it's billed as a singing contest I'd choose their style of entertainment any day. Hopefully they will be in it for a couple of more weeks yet. As for a singing performance I thought Jamie stole the show

I disagree about the twins they are hysterical and are entertaining so they cant sing but as we saw from Sundays show neither can many other top pop acts without the backing tapes! They are the next Ant & Dec. Cant wait for Louis to come back next week! Olly and Joe were Fab. Joe is so cute he reminds me of a little puppy!

I thought the X Factor was absolutely brill this weekend. However, I think it was right that Ricki went his performance wasnt upto standard. But have this feeling that John and Edward could be there to stay as it seems they are being voted in just to annoy and its seems to be working. Watch this space the final could be there's but hope not. As for Cheryl her performance was just out of this world and it most defintely if you were watching it all defintely not one bit pre-recorded it was defintely live and loved it. Poor Whitney what a drama with a wardrobe malfuntion on her first appearance on British TV for that happen but I think her performance was just average and her dress was too long for the dance moves. She looked uncomfortable. I wouldnt fancy being the persons in wardrobe. Defintely the sack for more thank Ricki last night backstage. Cheryl's performance was defintely the best of the night and Jamie or Lucie to win :) :

John and Edward are brilliant. Once they're gone I will stop watching because it becomes a run of the mill singing contest we've all seen before. I hope they stay in for awhile just for the pure entertainment value. Of course they can’t sing and can barely dance we know that, they even know that but that’s what makes it so hilarious.

The best I can hope for the twins now is that they're voted off before things become too nasty for them. I think they're really charming, affable and funny, but the fact that they can't sing can only lead to resentment from others (and understandably so). They're only eighteen; how are they going to cope with cutting comments from the public/media, etc? Louis shouldn't have put them through for that reason alone. I love their performances and look forward to seeing them again next weekend, though. And did anyone else feel for them last weekend when one of them burst into tears when they were put through? They're clearly not all that cocky after all! Bless! The right person went this week; Ricki was never going to be good enough, and like Joe he insists on smiling through sad songs ... you have to ask if either of them know what they're singing!? I'm worrying about Rachel; she's not taking the rejection very well and if she's in the bottom two again, how will she cope? Olly's performance was excellent - I'd be happy enough to see either him or Stacey win. I can't warm to Jamie, but have to admit his performance was also stand-out. And WHAT was Cheryl wearing???

Cheryl's performance was fine, but I think Alexandra showed her up for what she really is - A backing singer in a girlband. I feel for Rachel. Is she going to be able to handle it when she is eliminated?

The twins are starting to grow on me, I thought it was hilarious doing the Britney routine. At least they use the whole stage in their performance unlike some of the singers,(Danyl springs to mind)who just stand there and open their mouths as wide as they can!! Cheryl's performance was top class, the coreoghraphy was fantastic, so what that it was partly pre-recored. A lot of the big artists do it if the have a big production like hers. As for Robbie and Whitney, eh I don't think rehab worked!! Roll on next saturday.

Olly to win! I just loved him this Sat night, that performance alone convinced me! Joe is great too but Olly is a better age for me to be admiring him the way I was!mmm mmm! He was brilliant!

At one stage, Dermot referred to the contestasts as 'Housemates' - poor Dermy, the strain must be getting to him! Now, we all know that Jedward aren't great at the singing lark - but don't be so quick to suggest that they should gracefully retire. They have definite potential in the Children's TV area - a kind of budget version of Ant & Dec. Joe McElderry is great - I love to see his smiling face, as indeed I love to see Louis smile. Missed Mr Walsh big-time this week - his return will be most welcome. Felt sorry for Rachel being in the bottom two again..when we all know she's a far better singer than Lloyd and Jedward. BUT - Rachel would need to cop on to herself. Standing there with a face like a slapped ar..ticle....is not going to endear her to the viewing public. Cheryl's singing was mediocre - she's lucky she's cute. Whitney is not the woman she used to be in some ways...though she certainly filled her dress. Felt a bit sorry for her when the strap broke...live television is certainly interesting!

So happy x factor blog is back!! I kinda thought everyone was rubbish and I dont think the contestants are half as talented as they were last year, with the exception of Olly. I think that Racheal should have went. Her performance was not that great and people dont like her. I feel like she can only sing well when she's singing slow ballads lik Pink and U2. I think with the absence of Louis, the vote should have went to the public and I think Rikki would have stayed. He had the potential to be brilliant! Imagine him in Big Band Week??? He had such a jazzy voice. It was a shame. I think the dark horse is Joe. I think he will be like Eoin Quigg was last year and go all the way and I think Miss Frank have the potential to be AMAZING....they just need the right song and nicer clothes!! Cheryl was 100% live, she even went off key around the 2min mark and I think she was brill!! Waaaaay better than Whitney who didnt look to be "with us" very much...she didnt even look at Dermot when he was asking her questions!! There's so much to say about all of them...i love them all!!

Oh I dont really know who's my fav this year, prob Olly, Lucie or Joe. My least fav is definitely Danly, he thinks he above the rest of them and is too cocky for my liking. Jamie bugs me too, the hair, clothes, hairy chest! All so annoying, though i will admit he sang great on sat, prob the best on the nite. Thought Cherly was brill, she lived up to the challenge, im sure she was a bag of nerves!! Whitney was defo away in another world, her whole performance was dodgy from the word go.

Whitney was def on plantet zog. Whatever she is taking to return to earth it isnt working. Think she should have just stayed in retirement and left us thinking she was unreal. Thought Cheryl did ok. Dance routine was stunning but def not the best vocals, but that lady can do no wrong and No 1 she will be soon enuf.Stacey,Jamie & Joe for the final : )

I agree with everyone who love Olly - himself and Jamie were definitely the stand outs on Saturday. Miss Frank could be amazing but it just didn't work for them this time. Hopefully with Louis back this week they'll do better. I think Rachel could be brill too but again it just hasn't worked for her yet for whatever reason. Lloyd was terrible but is so cute and sweet! I still think Ethan should be there. I'm glad Rikki went - he just didn't do it for me at all. And the twins, has to be one of the funniest things ever on X Factor them doing Britney. They seem to be really popular with everyone in the house so good for them. They aren't great singers but they are great entertainers. I really liked Whitney, it's great to see her back. Yeah she was a bit strange at the end talking to Dermot but I still love her. Cheryl's a good dancer... I can't wait for big band week, especially the twins singing She Bangs - imagine!

John and Edward to win!!!! lol! Cant everyone see they are totally taking the micky out of the whole competition.... its a total wind up.... they know they cant sing or dance... it's a joke to them, and they are exposing the show for what it really is. Just watch them on stage at the end of their performance... they do the Eoghan Quigg half smile, like it's a take off of him! They don't care how far they get.... they are a million times better than any of the others, and their performance was better than Robbie Williams on the first show! Go John and Edward!!!

I LOVE THE SHOW BUT EQUALLY LOVE HOLLY WILLOUGHBY ON THE EXTRA FACTOR.SHE IS GREAT.

Posted by PADDY on October 20, 2009 at 07:40 PM BST #

JEDWARD FOREVER! agree wtih Sharon, they know they're not amazing singers, but they're entertaining and that's what you want from a saturday night TV show. Who actually cares who wins X-Factor anyway? If they're good enough they'll make a career without winning - look at JLS. I think people are taking the twins far too seriously, they're tongue-in-cheek and bit of a laugh and i hope they're kept in for the lognhaul!

Seriously John and Edward? Robbie is behind them all the way

Posted by Flamered on October 21, 2009 at 11:50 AM BST #

Yep, Robbie Williams has declared for Jedward. Nothing from Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, or the Pope, as yet...but it's surely only a matter of time

Posted by Deirdre on October 21, 2009 at 01:06 PM BST #

I think Holly Willoughby is BRILL and I love Dermot, God help him he has to listen to it all...tears, laughs, hugs, thumps...he is the bizz. Thought Whitney should have stayed retired as I really thought she done herself no favours whatsoever...however bad the singing and the clothes were what about looking at the floor when she was talking to dermot and looking like she was totally off the wall?? Cheryl was good, better than whitney but she must have been nervous and I really wanted to lift that hat out of her eyes!! She was really good though, must have been hard for her. I really like Lucie and Jo. Danyl is SO annoying, can't believe Simon let him through. Jamie annoys me too but he is good. I think Stacey is Soooo funny, she always makes me laugh with her kwirky ways! The twins are a scream, doing no favours for XFactor as it is supposed to be the show for TALENT and they are nowhere near that! Miss Frank need to do something about their wardrobe and makeup and hair - all a wee bit off the wall!! I do think the talent was better last year. Really miss Louis, he completes it. Love Simon's ways and cheryl...still trying to warm to Danni - her hair is totally mad! It is totally nail biting stuff and can't go out on a Saturday or sunday night now!!!

Posted by Annie on October 21, 2009 at 02:13 PM BST #

Good for the twins! People are deluding themselves into thinking the X factor is a talent show! It's just a funny money spinning reality TV show. What the hell would Simon Cowell and Louie Walsh possibly know about talent? Neither can even play the tin whistle for God sake!

Posted by Ray on October 27, 2009 at 03:40 PM GMT #

do you guys really think that john and edward are there to sing brilliantly and win the show... No of course there not. there on that show to learn and if they do win then good on them. its not easy to sing when the public makes you centre of attention and half the public hates you. so cut them so slack poor little things!!! :)

Simon went over the border last night. He insulted the audience by two bare-faced lies. Even as a tv reality show there is a limit to how much you can insult the intelligence of people.
