The X Factor - Fourth Live Show
It always seems harsh when a really good singer leaves the competition early but I suppose that's the nature of a public vote. If the contestant connects with the audience hopefully they'll go the distance, if not (as in Rachel's case) then the writing is on the wall from the beginning. And, while I think Rachel has a spectacular voice, to be in the bottom two for a third time in four weeks says a lot. It was clearly never going to happen for her.
It's not that I thought Lloyd was a stronger singer (he isn't) but it was his first time in the bottom two and I genuinely think he's much better when he picks his own songs (maybe he could up his game a bit in the coming weeks). Glad Rachel pulled it back by thanking the judges before she left because for a few minutes (when she didn't hug poor Lloyd back) I thought she was going to be very ungracious in defeat (and after all, it wasn't his fault that she was heading home).
All bets are off
Around this stage of the competition every year it gets really difficult to predict who is going to go home each week. You'd like to think that the most talented singers will be guaranteed a place in the final but you know that that's just not a certainty. The show is about much more than someone's voice. It's about personality, popularity and presence (and sometimes it's just about how many youngsters want to vote for the little heartthrobs in the show!). But if there's a genuine 'superstar-in-the-making' (like Leona) then you'd like to think that it would be obvious from the start and that seems to be the problem with this year's show. There are lots of decent singers but nobody that really stands out as having potential to become a mega-star.
For me, Olly, Joe and Lucie have been consistently impressive. They can sing, perform and are versatile with the genres of the show. Rachel never disappointed vocally any week but she just didn't seem to have the same level of connection with the audience in her performances. Stacey has an amazing voice but I fear that her performance ability is going to let her down. I think that her hilarious, bubbly personality has been winning her votes but Simon is right about her lack of stage movement – it's time to notch it up a gear in order to compete with the others.
I used to love Jamie Afro at the beginning but (dare I say it for a second week) I'm beginning to agree with Louis. He's doing nothing to set himself apart and his performances have all been really similar, except for diva week when he proved that he's not just a rocker. He needs to do more of that, mix it up a bit. As for Danyl, well I'm afraid he's never going to win me over and that display of head-hanging and bawling this week did him no favours in my eyes. Either you want your place in the show or you don't. And again, I'm with Louis, the twins have had to deal with far worse press and they've just concentrated on their performances, tried to be enthusiastic and not looked for sympathy at every turn and that's to their credit I think. People seem to have responded to their efforts to impress.
That dress
We have to have a word for Cheryl's 'dress'. Ordinarily I love her styling but this week I thought that Saturday night's wardrobe choice was a mistake. As she said herself, it was a 'standing-up dress' not a 'sitting-down dress'! Fair play to her for taking the slagging about the dress and having a laugh about it though because it mustn't have been easy for her when that caller rang up The Xtra Factor and told her that the dress looked awful, to her face and in front of the other judges. I love how brave the callers are on that show. Fair play also to the woman who told Simon he was a useless mentor (I don't think that he is but how funny was his face? That must have taken guts!).
The special guests
I've always loved Dermot as the presenter of the show (I think he's great with the contestants and feisty with the judges) but I found a new level of respect for him last night when he high-fived Richie Sambora in the name of a boyhood dream. Nice touch to ask Jon Bon Jovi for permission first too. I also loved JLS's performance on the show. I thought that they were great last year so I'm thrilled to see them having a successful career now. Can't wait to hear the album. I'm loving the first two singles. And the big question has to be: Will they knock Cheryl off the topspot?!
