The Clinic - Season Finale

I'm still in shock after watching the season finale of The Clinic. What a great cliffhanger to finish on. At times the show was a little quiet this year but the finale more than made up for that.

 Dan's final insult
At the beginning of the show I was almost (only almost!) feeling sorry for Dan, as I watched him wandering around the clinic with his cardboard box, getting no sympathy from anyone. I know that he had made his bed but he did have a particularly tough time. Then he returned to being nasty Dan. He'd lost Cathy, Niall Boylan was making his life hell and people didn't really trust him as a doctor. It wasn't a fun year for him… but when Diarmuid and Lucille arrived I lost all sympathy for Dan. Edel called it right when she told him off for putting all of his colleagues lives in danger.

All about the drama!
Plenty of drama for Lucille this week. This week's show was nothing if not dramatic. First of all the team had to perform surgery on Lucille's gunshot wound, then they were all held captive at gunpoint and finally tragedy struck. It was a lot to cram into one episode but it worked.

In the middle of all the confusion and nervousness, it was Daisy who decided to speak up, coming full circle and reminding us of the feisty Daisy that we all loved from day one. She wasn't being businesslike or totally grown-up in her approach to the situation but she was being brave and passionate. OK, so it didn't quite work out for her but at least she tried.

Looking ahead
Ruairí - His life is hanging in the balance! My main wish at the end of this season of The Clinic was - please save Ruairí. He's a great character and he's good for Daisy. The show just wouldn't be the same without him. But what of poor Patrick? It seemed fitting that, in all madness of the shoot-out in Clarence Street, Patrick's absence would go unnoticed. He's one of those characters who always seems to blend into the background. I just hope it isn't too late for him when someone eventually realises that he's missing, sprawled across the floor in pain. Regardless of what happens with both of these characters, I have to say, excellent finale for the show, leaving two characters lives hanging in the balance. I just can't wait to see what happens next!

Why was the series so short this year?I can see from the blog that there was ten episodes last year, why only eight this year?

How good was the Clinic last night. One of the best ever cant believe this series has finished so quickly this year. Why?? But what an ending I think Rurari to survive and Patrick will be the one to die. Its defintely going to be a case of one lives the other dies and I think next season will go that way as whilst Patrick was gone he just seemed to blend into the background and there is more hope for Ruarai character to develop. Where was Keelin this whole season didnt really think it added much to last nights show for her just to appear. Missing it already and wish it was a long running drama roll on the box set dvd or next season :)

That was a brilliant episode last night. I thought Alison Doody looked stunning! Lorcan Cranitch was brilliant. That might have been unbelievable if a lesser actor was doing it, but it was gripping stuff. Like everyone else, it is such a shame there are only 8 episodes this year. Please RTE bring back a longer run next time. I assume there will be a next time?? Thought that Patrick should have had more to do. He's been a great character over the years and Gary Lydon is a top actor. And what oh what is going to become of Dan? One of the GREAT anti heroes! Fantastic stuff. Thanks.

Dan has always been fantastic in the series I hope he stays on but watching the teen actors delivering cliché after cliché can get a little tedious. Overall I think its' been a great creation though, right up there with batchelors walk

Fantastic ending. Really hope Ruairi isn't dead! I like his character. Crossing my fingers Dan will be back in a LONGER season RTE! I thought he kind of redeemed himself at the end when he risked his life to get Ruairi help. A great character to watch all season. Please stay on Dom!

I think dan redeemed himself (slightly) when he carried ruairi outside............ i still think he has a big part to play in the next series!!

I spend a lot of my time over in the UK, and I can't understand why The Clinic isn't shown there. A medical drama that is better written, better acted and better filmed than any they have over there. Maybe at times this year the stories were verging on the soapy? Only at times. The quality of acting though steered it through. A tremendous climax too. Dan redeemed? Some seismic shift happened to him that's for sure. And while I'm at it - Dominic Mafham, what a performance! Absolutely superb. So well done RTE. A truly great programme. But let's see it over there and show them what we can do!

Maybe Ruairi does die, but the Clinic goes all Greys Anatomy and he keeps reappearing to Daisy. In all seriousness though, what a classic episode - really well paced and great tension. I hope we get another season or two more...

I agree with everyone here. A classic episode. A brilliant series. BUT - i've heard that RTE have axed the show? Linda, is that right? I can't believe it!! It can't be true surely? Apparently ratings had dipped this year, but even so, they were still very respectable from what I can see. I think this is a great mistake if it's true. The Clinic is loved by so many people.

Hi Mary, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately The Clinic will not be returning to our screens next year. You can read the full story here: http://www.rte.ie/arts/2009/1124/theclinic.html

I'm gutted that the series has been axed, it's the best show on Irish television! Surely they'll bring it back if there's enough public support?

Can't believe the Clinic is finished! Am in shock after reading about it online. It is a great Irish show.
