Strictly Come Dancing - Ali Falls At Last Hurdle

I know I have been championing Team Cola for a while now but I must admit I was disappointed to see Ali go over the weekend. All three couples deserved to be in the final and there would have been three if Jade hadn’t been forced out due to injury. It would have been great to see the two best dancers (Ricky and Ali) and the most improved (Chris) there for the final week with each having a chance to do their show dance.

While Ali and Brian’s American Smooth was beautiful on Saturday night (boy did the judges reward them predictably?) it has to be said that their Argentine tango was far from impressive. Ali’s performances are a real mixed bag. She can at times appear so accomplished and confident and then, mainly in the Latin dances, seems to just lose it momentarily. This is very distracting. I was under-whelmed with their tango on Saturday (not to mention that mad flower in her hair) but it did finish better than it started.

Their AS was fab-u-lous but what’s the story with Brian going in for the kiss at the end? Was that a last minute bid to secure their final spot? If so it didn’t work. I can’t really work out their relationship, is there something actually going on or is it just Mr Intensity with those mad eyes confusing us? Either way I am sorry to see them go and I will definitely be tuning into ITT tonight to get the low down.

Ricky seems to have found his chi sometime in the last week and honestly for the first time I can say I felt it would have been unfair for him not the make it to the final next weekend. Talk about perfect timing. Both his performance were fantastic and badly done Craig for denying them a fifty which they absolutely deserved! Natalie is a great choreographer but maybe it will take me a few series to warm up to her. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next week and I am nervous that from a dance perspective, rather than a performance one, they could wipe the floor with their opponents and make it a one-horse race from the start.

And so to Chris and Ola! I really hope they have not peaked in the popularity stakes two weeks too early and that they don’t suffer a backlash after the departure of Ali. The judges certainly did their best (some more than others – I am talking about you Bruno!!) on Saturday night to scupper their chances. They have been consistently under-marked throughout the competition. Let’s hope next Saturday that the panel can suck it up and just let them do their thing without giving them a hard time. They threw everything they had at it on Saturday night and I really enjoyed both performances. Ola continued to give the wardrobe dept very little to do with her barely-there rumba costume setting new standards in the minimal use of material. Well if you’ve got it girl then flaunt it!

I adored Ian and Natalie’s Foxtrot and felt that it was better than Darcy’s outing with Ian. I really don’t feel she adds much to the show and it will be interesting to see if she returns next year. The Daily Mail reports today that Alesha’s nose is out of joint over Darcy's participation and that there are plans afoot to replace Alesha next year. That has to be a load of nonsense - firstly that Alesha would be bothered and second that Darcy is making more of an impact. Rubbish.

Hats off to the couple who performed the show dance – they were incredibly acrobatic! But did anybody else feel that there was too little dancing and too much gymnastics? It reminded me of Brendan and Lisa’s show dance last year which I really didn’t enjoy. A show dance should have a little bit of everything as Tom and Camilla's did.

And so the end is near and I have to stick by Chris and Ola despite Ricky's prowess! Here's hoping they put on a good show.

I haven't been able to watch the whole of Saturday night's episodes as I went to see Bell X1 but never fear it has been taped and I am due to watch it tonight! I can't wait!! So happy that Team Cola are still in but I agree that it would have been great to have all 3 in the final. Ricky & Natalie were amazing on Saturday but i just can't warm to either of them. Anyway I know who I'll be rooting for next Saturday!!!

Was sad to see Ali go, delighted team cola made it, again undermarked! As for Ricky I just don't like him, don't want him to win, don't care for his partnership, I just can't support him or Natalie. It just seems to fake. Going by the posts on the bbc site, you'd swear it was the end of the world that cola made it! Wanting him to step aside, crazy stuff, Tom wasn't the best dancer and he won last year, it is down to popularity too. Taking things a tad too serious me thinks! I loved Darcy's performance. I felt the show dance had a few errors! I was on the edge of my seat full sure he'd drop her.

I think it was a disgrace to see Ali & Brian voted off after all is a dance competition it is not a popularity contast and if Chris was to go on and win it, it would make a compleat laugh of the whole show Is there any body out there that think that Chris is a better dancer that Ail ???

while I don't think Chris is a better dancer than Ali, I do enjoy watching Chris more!! I loved Ali in the ballroom but she never did it for me in the latin! I still think Ricky should win tho!!!

I was really sad to see Ali go, I agree her tango wasn't great but she still deserved to be in the final. I love Chris & Ola but I think it was their time to go on Saturday. They had done themselves proud and could have gone out with their heads held high. Now it has turned into a bit of a joke. I agree that it is down to popularity as well as dance but within reason - I mean Chris can't hold a candle to Ali or Ricky. Last year Tom was a great dancer, he didn't win based on popularity alone which Chris will be if he wins next week. Ricky & Natalie do come across as a bit fake but I still think they are amazing together and I can't wait to see their show dance.

I fancy Chris & Ola purely because they will be the underdogs and the public tend to vote for the underdog and they have great charisma. You only have to look at the American version to see Donny Osmond win and he wasn't the best dancer but was a great showman and all his Osmand fans voted for him.

Of course it is a personality contest, the technically best dancer doesn't always win or get to stay in (eg Zoe this season), Chris and Ola make me smile and want to dance! That's what the show is about for me!

Everyone goes on that it's a dance competition not a popularity one. I didn't know who Chris Hollins was before this...but to see him improve week after week after week has been phenominal. Ricky has been the same since week 1, no real improvement. It is a dance competition but it's a competition to see who has improved most and learned a new skill...not the best dancer in the world.

I'm delighted Chris and Ola are through. It was sad to see them on ITT not feeling like they deserved to celebrate the fact that they are in the final. They've put in just as much work as anyone else, if not more, and they're a pleasure to watch, unlike some of the other couples. I remember that show dance couple in the semi final before and Brendan just seemed to mimic their style for his and Lisa's dance in the final which was really disappointing.

@Maria - By your logic then we should only ever have poor dancers on Strictly because good dancers will never improve as much. And I think Ricky has improved from good to great whereas Chris will never be anything other than an average dancer for all his improvement.

A great win for Chris and Ola.Their enthusiasm and determination paid off. They have been constantly undermarked by the judges.Although Chris didn't have a natural ability for dancing to start with he came on great thanks to Ola believing in him.He never flinched when the judges were rude to him and proved to be a proper gent. Ola is a fantastic teacher and Chris a fantastic pupil, willing to go out and do his best against all odds. She never got a chance to show what she's capable of in the past as she got knocked out early on but Chris gave her the opportunity this year. Well done and have faith in yourself Chris as you did really well.
