Mad Men 'The Mountain King' - Episode 12

The Mad Men crewThat's some mouth eight-year-old Sally Draper has on her: "He left because you're stupid and mean". Honestly, I dread to think what would have happened if I ever spoke to my mum that way but then again Betty is lacking the essential Irish mammy ingredient, the wooden spoon. I'm not advocating it but it certainly dispelled such brave, cheeky outbursts! She has already tried alcohol and it was only a matter of time before she turned to cigarettes. Still she is missing her daddy and he has put them all through the ringer.

Dick Whitman
Dick is back and finally we get another piece of the Don puzzle. At the beginning I thought he was a little cruel with the real Mrs. Draper telling her that her husband "died…sorry." Then it transpires that they have become invaluable friends. At least he has someone to tell his inner secrets to although I can’t help but feel that he should be doing it with his wife. His army past, his family, the other women, all of it. If he came clean at least then they - he and Betty - have a chance.

Poor Joan has a battle on her handsAdoption
Pete is both hilarious and despicable. This week he once again shows his true colours. When Trudy noted that "You have lost your mind" it's amazing that she hadn't noticed that he had lost it a long time ago. I can't believe the way he spoke to his father-in-law, hardly good business or family sense.

Girl Guides
No matter how many times we are reminded of how much of a man's world it was in the 60's, it's still shocking. Joan's fiancé being case and point this week – what a slimeball. It’s the double standards that are the most riling part of the equation. Please tell me she'll manage to walk away from that engagement before it's too late or perhaps she's thinking it's better the devil you know? Surely all men weren't like-minded?

'Mad Men' is on RTÉ One, late night Mondays. Episode 13, the final episode in Season 2 'Meditations in an Emergency' on Monday 29 June at 11.50pm on RTÉ One.

Comments:

Did the RTE execs not read my last comment, 11:50 is too late to be airing such a quality show. Don Drapers character has so much depth. You want to hate him for leaving his wife & constantly committing adultery but this episode shows there is some goodness in him. Great to see how they capture the changing role of women in the 60's. Joan's fiancee forces himself upon her & she acts like nothing happened, while Peggy demands an office so she can be on an equal playing field with the men. Quality drama.

As I said when Ifirst contributed tot his blog from Episode 1,Series 1.I so wanted a cigarette even though I'm off them.Betty is not Snow White as she seems to be ,a bit devious,I would say after hoisting the toy boy ,Mr.Case that was making advances on her to Sara Beth.True ,Sara didn't have to sleep with him but not everybody has the hard and true principles she possesses but still she wasn't naive enough to think nothing would happen She has a steel core when these principles are threatened or compromised.

Much as I think Pete is contemptible, I have to agree with his course of action with his father-in-law. Having the threat of losing the account hanging over his head would have been terrible, every time his wife wanted anything, all she had to do was run to Daddy to get her way. A little bit like the deal he was offering Don when he tried to blackmail him, being on the receiving end, Pete did exactly what Don did…. Did he learn a lesson from the Master I wonder...

Mark - I was equally surprised by Don or Dick's good behaviour and thoroughly agree with your view on how they capture the changing role of women in the 60's. Re your query regarding the late scheduling of the show, RTÉ love to hear feedback from our viewers so do drop a line to info@rte.ie Brian - I too was a bit shocked by Betty's behaviour this week. Do you think it's as a result of Don's harsh treatment of her? Rose Ann - Love your theory. Trudy should really learn to fight her own battles but then again it was a man's world and maybe turning to daddy was her only recourse.

Why can't we watch Mad men on RTE Player?

Posted by Ann Murnaghan on June 25, 2009 at 08:25 AM BST #

Hi Ann, I know that would be the ideal solution to the late night airing of 'Mad Men'. I've asked about this before and RTÉ unfortunately don't have the copyright to re-air 'Mad Men' on the player (www.rte.ie/player). Can't believe we're almost at the end of Season Two...wonder what Season Three will bring. Taragh
