Mad Men 'The Inheritance' - Episode 10

Betty's dad Gene may be recovering from a stroke but he still has a finger on the pulse when it comes to Don. He wasn't far wrong when he complained that he: "…has no people. You can't trust a person like that."

Don and Bobbi...he still thinks he doesn't owe Betty an explanation!Holiday Romance
After they slept together I was sure Don had wormed his way back into Betty's heart without so much as an apology. Thankfully Betty is a stronger woman or at least has been transformed into one due to her husband's philandering ways. He has broken their marriage vows and bonds of trust and it's going to take more than a quick cuddle to heal the wound. I wonder was Betty's strength of character atypical of the time?

The Black Vote
Another man whose getting a wake-up call thanks to the woman in his life is Paul. Sheila is a feisty woman on a mission and if he wants to stay in her life he's going to have to fight alongside her in her pursuit of the Black vote. He knows how to capitalise on any situation though as he convinces the vote seekers: "The Consumer has no colour".

Pulling from the Discards
Pete's mother was instrumental in showing the 60's view of adoption from a certain part of society. The fact that she was so disapproving Michael Gladis who plays Paul and Christina Hendricks aka Joanof Trudy and Pete's decision saying that Pete's father described adoption as "pulling from the discards" was pretty shocking. About time Pete and his brother revealed some of their father's other shocking revelations, particularly in relation to the inheritance.

Fear of Flying
Pete is such a great character because the second you begin to like the nasty boy, thanks to a humorous quip or a nice gesture, he turns. His complete ignorance when it comes to Peggy is shocking and not just in relation to the baby, about whom he has yet to hear. The way he really believes: "Everything is so easy for you" makes Peggy shine with her simple but realistic retort: "It's not easy for anyone, Pete."

Baby Shower
A regular, long-time occurrence in America, baby showers are gaining popularity on this side of the Atlantic. However while you will more than likely find Pampers in amongst the gifts, you won't often find Lucky Strikes on the list!

Realising you're in Charge
Great to see Helen back on the scene as she could be an important ally for Betty. On the one hand she'll help her to realise that you can go it alone but on the other she'll help Bets realise she needs to be sure before leaving Don for good. There is something a little unnerving about Helen but I think this is intentional as the writers want to show how much divorced women and families were frowned on at the time. Hopefully we'll get to know her better in 'The Jet Set'.

Hi,Tara, you're so succinct in review of the episode that it didn't leave me much to say except I thought my pride was heading for a fall when Betty "slept" with Don"while they were at her Father's house and that I would be proved wrong about them not getting back together.Fortunately she stuck to her guns when they returned. What about that!!!!! Helen's kid turned up after I mentioned him last week. It's great that Betty now has a "mentor". I believe Betty's endeavour was atypical of the time but showing the beginnings of contemporary Womens Lib /Feminism,reflecting the changes in social mores which became a hallmark of the "Sixties". P.S.Being an anorak/geek,were the shirts Don's ex-secretary bought for him in the "Six Months Leave "episode from the Rachel Menken store. I just remember the name on the bag being displayed so blatantly but I can't remember was it "Menken". Maybe it was a in-joke /trivia fact by the programme makers!

I am increasingly loving this show, and missed it this week too when it wasnt on. Betty is such a fantastic character and I really enjoy her storylines more than anyone elses. Even though this show is called Mad MEN and may on the offset appear to be about a man's world, its the women who are the most intriguing and have the most depth. Betty's scene with her father was so heartbreaking and she only slept with Don because she needed some comfort but when she crawled in beside him it was so bittersweet. So glad she told him where to go once they got home though, I love that she's such a strong woman despite looking like the happy little blonde homemaker. And thats why I think her character is so brilliant, theres so much more to her than first meets the eye.
