Lost 'The Little Prince' - Episode Four

Well I felt it was time to give Taragh a short break from writing on Lost and I must admit I approach this task with some trepidation for two reasons. Firstly although I have been watching and loving Lost since the very first episode, I really haven’t a clue what’s going on and secondly judging by your comments each week you guys do!

Anyway here we go and please be kind!

First up, I enjoyed this episode the least of the new series and I think it was my own fault. Last week I did a little Lost surfing and found out that Jin was alive and was rescued by Danielle Rousseau circa 1988. Each episode needs those ‘oh my gawd’ moments and I just ruined last night’s. Note to self, resist the temptation this week!

Plot development?

So what did we learn last night? Not that much I reckon apart from the fact that Ben Linus is the one freaking Kate out over Aaron’s parentage. We should have guessed that one. Generally on Lost if you are wondering who is behind a dastardly deed it is either Ben Linus or Charles Widmore and let's face it Ben has been a little quiet since the start of season five.

Finally all this time travel has created a situation where one of the gang has witnessed a scene from their own time on the island and limited though Josh Holloway’s acting range is (he has a permanent angry/confused expression on his face) it does make you long for Kate’s return and the resulting drama that having her, Sawyer, Jack and Juliet sharing scenes will create.

And it is beginning to look like that is not too far away as the rescued six come together in Los Angeles albeit with Sun intending to kill Ben. No doubt he is aware that Jin is still alive and as soon as he informs her, that will end that particular plot line.

Don’t the makers of Lost just love sending us down blind alleys like last night with the appearance of Claire’s mother? They manage to fill fifty minutes of television but in the end many of these scenes are completely expendable.

Before moving on to the exciting topic of nosebleeds just a note about Kate and Aaron. Looking again at the scene where Aaron was born it reminds you of just how uninterested Kate was in the baby in the first few seasons. If anything it was Sun and Charlie who helped Claire with him. Now being a parent to Aaron is apparently the driving force behind Kate’s character which makes me wonder if the programme makers had always intended it to be so. They keep telling us the plot was mapped out from the beginning but I have my doubts!

Nosebleeds

Is Daniel Faraday holding back or despite his experiments is he totally clueless about time travel? He has had ample time to let the group know what is happening to Charlotte and the rest of them but all he can manage is ‘it may have something to do with the length of time people have spent on the island'. How did he come up with that one and does he mean people who are supposedly new to the island (Charlotte and Miles) or there for longer (Juliet)?

That technique so often employed of preventing characters from giving key information by always moving events on at a breakneck speed is wearing a little thin.

Up next

Well no more sneak previews for me. I much prefer not knowing what to expect but I do hope that next week we see more of Desmond and Penny. I also would like more of Sayid and Hurley - the coolest and funniest characters in that order. Let us know what your thoughts on last night's show were.

Re: whether or not the nosebleeds are happening because of more/less time on the island, I assume Daniel implies the longer you've been on the island the sooner you will get the nosebleeds. It was already implied last season that Charlotte was born on the island or at least lived there for some part of her childhood, and Daniel pretty much implied that Miles may have been there before too, when he asked him if he was sure that this was his first visit. I took the implication to mean that Miles is quite possibly the baby that Dr.Marvin Candle was putting to sleep in the season premiere or at the very least he has previously lived on the island as a child. Juliet of course has been on the island some years now so it would exlain her being next in the nosebleed line.

Thanks Nat for that, had heard the Daniel comment re Miles but hadn't made the Candle connection. Will be interesting to find out his back story. Daniel is just generally driving me crazy with his knowing glances!! Spill already if you know something Dan.

Quick question. I'm a huge lost fan and I'm trying my hardest not to lose faith but I'm beginning to ask some questions. Last night when Sawyer etc were on the boat they had just found and were being shot at. The big flash happened again and the shooters disappeared. Here's my question...why did the boat they were on not disappear? Same applies to the guns they are carrying around from the 1950s. How have they not also disappeared. Have I missed something? If so can somebody please enlighten me

Yeah the sneak peak ruined it for you alright, it was a great moment when I found out Jin was still alive as he is a brilliant character!!!! No idea where it is going but very interested in seeing more of Richard Alpert.....

Martin, I think they said on the first episode of this season that whatever they had with them was able to go through the time travel. That was how the speedboat that Daniel and a few people were in was still there after the first flash. So happy Jin is alive, thought it was a great episode.

Whatever objects they're in contact / proximity too appear to get transported with them (Gets around the problem of them transporting naked all the time, right? ;)) Read elsewhere that the name Ben's van (You know, the one they transported Locke in) - "Canton Rainier" is an anagram of "Reincarnation." (You'll recall that the funeral parlor was an anagram for "Flash Forward")

I am a fan of Lost & have been getting a lot of comments because of it but i don't care. This season I find it very confusing but I am still glued to it. I love Jack & Kate I would like to see more of them getting to gether. Sun is getting to be very scary. Would Jin aprove? I guess she is very angry. Where is her child?

You can't beat a good double shocker. Oh my God it's Jin! Oh my God it's a young Danielle!. Personally I hope this is leading to a storyline that has yet to be really explained; that of the Black Rock. Apart from Danielle's overt oddness and a couple of semi-successful dynamite excursions, we have been pretty much left in the dark on that one. Do people remember the flashback where Widmore was at the auction bidding for a painting of the afformentioned vessel? I really thought there must be some back story worth elaborating after that scene.

I too have a bad feeling that when Lost finishes there will be many, many unanswered questions, and that the ending will divide people- some will love it and some will be quite annoyed. I think it will leave things slightly up in the air and leave it to the viewer to work some things out- like some books do. All the fuss the last episode of Sopranos stirred up will be nothing compared to Lost! It will be interesting to see how Jack's character changes- before he left the island he doubted all the mystic stuff Locke was harping on about- will he return to this mode or will he now be open to all that jazz?

Well seeing as this is the second last series there isn't much time to explain everything so no doubt some things will seem rushed or kinda thrown together as explanations... still we have gotten so much more information in this series than in the others (upto the fifth episode) so if it stays this way we can't be that disappointed!

Enjoying this new season but continues to throw up more questions than answers and I hope its doesn't get too overloaded and end up with mediocre answers, all in a hurry. With all this time travelling business would love to see Dr. Echo make an appearance, one of the best characters to have left it.
