Lost 'LaFleur' – Episode 8

Juliet is looking and sounding a lot nicer these daysIn a word: wow. At first I thought 'LaFleur' was just going to be another of those gap-filling, essential yet not fascinating, episodes but not so.

Locke's axis jump-start may have rid Juliet and co of their headaches and nose bleeds but any more 'Three Years Later' or 'Three Years Earlier's' and they would relay them onto us. As per Enda's thought headaches post to our comment box (below) last week.

Geeks-ville
We've The Others, The Hostiles, The islanders, The Extras and now The Left Behinders, led by Sawyer. I never thought I'd see the day where Sawyer was unashamedly wearing glasses, tucking his hair behind his ear all geeky-like and playing house. Suburbia obviously suits him and, even more surprisingly, Juliet and himself look like a good couple. We should have known that as soon as he tried to convince his pal, dodgy-haired, Horace that three years was plenty of time to get over a lost love, cue freckles. Despite the cutesy moment when Sawyer came face to face with Kate for the first time in three years, Juliet and he should stick together leaving Jack and Kate to grow up and get it (back) on. Wasn't sure about Juliet at the start, she had a touch of the Ben about her but seeing her cry with joy at the birth of Amy's baby boy was a turning point.

Season 5
Its Sawyer time as he leads The Left BehindersSomething that Abrams writers have been doing a lot of this season is speaking our mind. We had Fionnuala Flanagan asking us to take a leap of faith and Sawyer highlighting any obvious absurdities/ observations ("It'll be on the 'Coconut Telegraph' by breakfast) and this week it was Miles turn. He may be slow off the mark (many posters registered that in some of our previous blogs – to add your comment, see below) but he shared our frustration of the to-ing and fro-ing between the Orchid and the beach.

Richard
Finally someone else, other than 'Lost' fans in sitting rooms across the world, has noticed Richard's make-up. It had to be Sawyer: "Your Buddy Out There with the Eyeliner!" Classic. A little quick thinking and a lot of great one-liners and Sawyer restored peace for the Dharma Initiative once again but for how long? How is it that Richard always looks the same? One week he seems to know everything and the next, nothing. Although we know he's a big player as he was the one who recruited Juliet back on the mainland amongst other previous incarnations.

Polar Bears
Here's a theory that a friend has about the polar bears; the Dharma Initiative brought them to the island (why?), over time they escaped and bred, only to be seen years later by the plane crash victims. Well? Still doesn't explain Smokey.

Hammered-time
It's 'Lost' so anything is possible but Horace's post-argument antics weren't exactly the norm. The booze swilling part, maybe, but the dynamite-firing addendum? Not really. Also judging by that dodgy wig, Horace is obviously going to return at some stage in a different guise – any ideas?

Wherefore art thou Ben?
Where has Ben been hiding out this week?Where is Ben in this week's time line, leading Richard and co? Or perhaps the more appropriate question is: when is Ben? We know from previous episodes that he spent part, if not all, of his childhood on the island as we've seen young Ben and his girlfriend, Annie. His alias, actor Michael Emerson, has hinted that we'll see them both again. Could it be that young Ben met Sawyer and co as a child?

Extras
Wee Charlotte was very cute, tad Casper-esque but cute nonetheless. Daniel is vowing not to tell her but of course he will. Why did Amy have to hand over her Paul to the Hostiles, couldn't they have just visited his body and observed as he was buried? Perhaps then she wouldn't still be grieving for him and Horace's liver would be spared. What and when was that God or Pharaoh statue from?

Next week
Episode 9 is 'Namaste' which translated means the light in me honours the light in you. Confused? Me too. Now that the Oceanic 3 (no doubt Sayid and Sun will turn up very soon, probably next week) are reunited with The Left Behinders, where to next? How will Sawyer lie his way around his friends' reappearance three years after his 'boat crashed'? What does Locke have in store for them all? Are the Subs still coming to the island and will they do their deed and head home? Mick wrote in an interesting comment last week about whether Sawyer and co will meet Caesar and co?

Taragh Loughrey-Grant

Will Michael's spirit live on through Walt?P.s. Jacko, think you were spot on about Ben's reasons for preventing Locke's suicide attempt but then I read GB's, which was great reading and an interesting angle too. (See last week's comments at the end of last week's blog here) S, you got your Sawyer/ Kate reunion, with more next week – what did you think? Lisa, Jim A and Kevin think Walt is just as NB as Locke in 'Lost', tell us more and thoughts on Hurley too. Alex Weir made a great point about a future scene involving Jack and Walt…time will tell.

Darren, terrified by your Ben beat-up theory because it looks very likely. Tony Falloni (great name) I'm with you on the whole Good V's Evil, Charles and Ben are equally unlikely heroes. After KMcD and Found's posts – are we agreed that Ray the farmer and Jack's Ray are different peops? Will the latter return though? Anna, spot on re Locke the philosopher, think we touched on that back in Season 1 but no harm to remember all of these ref's.

There will be no 'Lost' episode this Sunday 15 March and the programme will return on Sunday 22 March on RTÉ Two at 9pm.

Was Horace not the name of the guy who's body Saywer and Hurley found in a Dharma van in season 2/3? I'm loving this season so much!

Good to see Sawyer and Juliette getting to flex their acting muscles again. Not sure about Sun and Sayid turning up in 1974, they may have ended up in the present on the island. Assuming the island does still have a present, that is where Rose and Bernard are... Ben must also be floating around the island at this time, for me meet Rosseau and had a child with her, but yet in the three years they've been there, Sawyer and co. haven't encountered him. Which, I guess, means Ben was never with the Dharma crew, and is with 'The Others', ready to kill them all as we saw he did a while back.....

That big statue was the top part of the four toed statue that Sayid found at the end of season 2.

Polar Bears explained. I thought it was made apparent lond ago what the story was with the Polar bears and I find it odd that people keep asking when there are far more interesting questions. The very first Dharma video we saw showed Polar bears and I believe mentioned acclimatising animals to environments that aren't their own. If it wasn't mentioned there then the big clue came with the Hatch map that Radzinsky had been working on. There are screenshots of what is written on the web and this is mentioned.

Where were Sayid and Sun?? Thought the whole point was thay couldn't go back to the Island until they were ALL together so how come only 3 of them turned up?? Loved Sawyer and Juliet - sucks that Kates going to ruin it all by showing up. Also where was Daniel last night in the 3 years forward bit? And where (when) is Locke?

Posted by Grainne on March 09, 2009 at 01:09 PM GMT #

Locke said to Alpert a few weeks ago 'how old are you?', remember? Then last week on the Locke episode when he went to visit Hurley in Dundrum, he was drawing a sphinx. Remember? Now, the thing with Alpert and his eye liner i think is this; the pharaoh statue thing, i'd say it has Alpert's face on it and the reason he has eyeliner is because he was a pharaoh way back when as they all used to wear eyeliner, lip gloss, the lot and he is thought of in that way.

Posted by Aldo on March 09, 2009 at 02:46 PM GMT #

Horace is the guy that Locke seen in a dream in the jungle building a cabin for his wife - Jacobs cabin! Richard Alpert's initials are RA, is that an egyptian god or at least it was in the Mummy!

Posted by Found on March 09, 2009 at 04:02 PM GMT #

oh, The guy in VW van that sawyer and hurley found was called "Roger Workman" i think! Haha, Dundrum! Ben did not father rousseau's child he stole her!

Posted by Found on March 09, 2009 at 04:16 PM GMT #

A lot of talk about the statue suggests it is Egyptian and depicts some Egyptian god. One possibility is that it could be the god Anubis -check out this image(http://www.linsdomain.com/gods&goddesses/pictures/relief-anubis.jpg). Anubis has ears similar to that of the statue and the symbol of the Ankh can be seen in this picture, which is the same as the necklace Paul wore in this episode. Another god that fits the description is Horus (http://www.logoi.com/pastimages/img/horus_3.jpg). Horus also wore an Ankh and his name is very similar to that of Horace Goodspeed, who was an important character in this episode. The fact that Hurley recently drew a picture of a sphinx, and also that there are hieroglyphs all around the island (the secret room in Ben's house, the Temple, the countdown timer in the Hatch) along with the possibility of this statue being an Egyptian god, suggests that ancient Egyptians may have lived on the island before or that the island dates back to those times. Finally, the exit point from the island when the wheel is turned (where Locke and Ben both ended up) is in Tunisia. Charlotte also discovered a Dharma polar bear here. Tunisia is quite close to Egypt geographically.

I loved last nights show. It was great. I just hope there won't be any more going forward & back again. Can't wait for nxt week. I hope we see Jack & Co and not another part of the story!

This weeks episode was one of the best this season. Being a Sawyer fan I was obviously happy that this was a Sawyer/James/Jim sentric episode. I loved the fact that Sawyer wasn't waiting around for Kate to return but, saying that, I loved the moment when he clapped eyes on her again. Also did anyone notice...Jack seemed quite happy to see Sawyer again....hmmmmm Re: Lostaddict's query. Roger was the name of the guy that Hurley found in the Dharma van and he was also Ben's father.

Posted by Catriona on March 09, 2009 at 04:31 PM GMT #

Does anyone know what is the significance of the wooden necklace that dead guy Paul was wearing? Have we seen someone else wearing it in previous episodes that could now be linked to Dharma?

Posted by Fiona on March 09, 2009 at 04:45 PM GMT #

Sawyer and Juliet should not be together! No no no! Loved the look between Sawyer & Kate, brought a tear to my eye. I've given up trying to figure things out on this show, just gonna watch and see how it all pans out. Not arsed guessing anymore.

Posted by S on March 09, 2009 at 04:57 PM GMT #

I couldn't quite figure out where I had seen or heard of Horace before. Then it clicked, way back when Locke was shot by Ben, he was looking for Jacobs cabin...along which route he met Horace chopping wood who told him he had been dead 16 years and he must find him if he wants to get to the cabin that Horace was building. Locke finds all the Dharma bodies (Bens doings) and Ben shoots him leaving him for dead. Then Locke wakes up in the pit and finds he's lying on Horaces skeleton, and in the pocket of his jumpsuit is a map to the cabin.....phew, hard to get all that out...but I knew we had met that guy before!

More on the Egyptian angle here, especially regarding the statue. http://www.getlostpodcastmedia.com/2009/03/04/lost-episode-5x08-lafleur-screencaps-easter-eggs-audio-analysis/ I guess I'm wrong about it being Sawyer :-)

Posted by Alex Weir on March 09, 2009 at 10:22 PM GMT #

@lostaddict: Locke met Horace in the jungle, he was building a cabin but then said he died years before. I think that the cabin was where Locke heard Jacob speak to him.

before jack came back to the island he was the unstable one, now sawyer is the reliable one saving everyone, being the "hero", what sawyer has become is what jack was, This hero sytle is why kate liked jack, so no doubt she will fall for sawyer again and instead of 3 people involved there will be 4 with juilet, i dont about any1 else but i got sick of the sawyer jack kate story back in season two,

Posted by Mick on March 10, 2009 at 09:54 AM GMT #

The wooden necklace is called an 'ankh'. This is what wikipedia says about it; The ankh was the Egyptian hieroglyphic character that read "eternal life", a triliteral sign for the consonants ?-n-?. Egyptian gods are often portrayed carrying it by its loop, or bearing one in each hand, arms crossed over their chest. It is also known as the key of life, the key of the Nile, or as crux ansata, Latin for "cross with a handle".

Posted by Aldo on March 10, 2009 at 10:14 AM GMT #

Horus, an Egyptian god who represents power. It's probably no coincidence that his name is a homophone for Horace Goodspeed. Make of this what you will, but in Egyptian myth, Horus' main rival was a god named Seth. In The Bible, Seth is the father of Enos. And Enos was the pseudonym used by Miles.

The Child that was born last night is BEN i think was Horace not his father in some of his flash backs

Posted by Ciars00 on March 10, 2009 at 11:41 AM GMT #

Child born last night could not have been Ben, that would put him at just 31 when the plane went down...and younger than Charolotte, which he can't be....

Posted by Anthony McGrath on March 10, 2009 at 12:20 PM GMT #

We saw Ben's birth already in a flashback in season 3 and this was not on the island. Also Horace was the guy who pulled over at the side of the road to try and help Ben's parents when his mother died, and he was the guy who gave Ben's father a job on the island with the Dharma Initiative.

Posted by Brian on March 10, 2009 at 01:02 PM GMT #

Ciars00, the baby was not Ben because we seen him being born in a previous season on the side of his road and his mother died in childbirth, this being the reason that his father resented him and why he (Ben's father) joined the Dharma initiative. I remember horace now in the jungle with Locke. The whole egyptian theory sounds really good, there's been a lot of references to it in the past few episodes. I can't wait to see what the end of teh programme will be but at teh same time I don't want it to end!!

Posted by lostaddict on March 10, 2009 at 01:54 PM GMT #

Indeed, ben it aint. but who is this child? And what is the signifigance of the successful birth? If this is the only child to survive other than Aaron, then surely that's no coincidence.

Posted by thelostsock on March 10, 2009 at 04:21 PM GMT #

How excited are we to find out the name of Amy and Horace's new baby? It's just gotta be someone we know!

Posted by Charlene on March 10, 2009 at 11:56 PM GMT #

Am giving up guessing too, just gonna watch to the end, the excitement is slowly going, its just too much for the likes of me. but I still love it......just not as much.

Posted by Mark on March 11, 2009 at 08:55 AM GMT #

Another great episode and things starting to come together. Horace as mentioned above met locke chopping wood for the cabin and was one of the bodies of the Dharma people that locke fell into after Ben shot him. As Taragh asked about Walt, I reckon that Walt is the next in line after Locke to lead the people on the Island, only it hasnt been revealed yet, and the reason the Others took him that night on the boat is that they knew this......The dreams are similar to dreams that locke had too...

Posted by Jim A on March 11, 2009 at 09:21 AM GMT #

Good point Jim A. You might be onto something there. Any ideas about those birds killing themselves around Walt way back in an early flashback? That was pretty creepy butI reckon it's definitely all part of a big Walt storyline to come.

Posted by thelostsock on March 11, 2009 at 11:40 AM GMT #

That little girl that waved to Daniel couldn't have been Charlotte. Charlotte was born in 1979 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Lewis_(Lost)), they were in the year 1977(?), definetely not 1979.

Posted by Stephen on March 11, 2009 at 12:40 PM GMT #

Walt appears to Locke when he is in the pit and tells him he has "work to do", there is also referances to Polar bears on a couple of occasions, Ben called him "special" when the others had him captive in series 2. His step father made referances to things "happening" around him as well. He seemed also to take to Locke very soon after the crash..... then again, I could be very very wrong...

Posted by Jim A on March 11, 2009 at 01:08 PM GMT #

The next episode is titled 'Namaste', not on till Sunday week. Namaste is the salutation that Dr. Marvin Candle uses to conclude all of his orientation films. It's Sanskrit for ''I bow to the divine in you,''.

Posted by Aldo on March 11, 2009 at 02:20 PM GMT #

Any chances that the child that was just born, is in fact John Locke? That made him so "special" to everyone on the Island? Then they moved him away from The Others via submarine..so he could come back years later?

Posted by Woj on March 12, 2009 at 12:27 AM GMT #

Woj, dont think it can be locke as the timeline is the '70s, locke was born in the '50's. Could it be Charlie???? but It may be just an important occurance for Juliet, the first baby that survived on the island for her...

Posted by Jim A on March 12, 2009 at 09:58 AM GMT #

My guess is the baby is Faraday, his age tie's in, explains his absence in 1977 and his real connection to has yet to be explained. Expect to see that Eloise is not his birth mother. As for the Statue and its ancient origins, I like the Richard theory, someone who does not age and is a dab hand at a bit of time travel was sure to be worshiped as a God. Have Sunday nights every been as head wrecking?

Posted by RU on March 12, 2009 at 10:21 AM GMT #

RU, its not gonna be Faraday, if you remember teh first episode of this season, we see Faraday digging underground in seventies dress plus Charlotte said when she was a kid she remembered him as a creepy man.

Posted by Aldo on March 12, 2009 at 02:08 PM GMT #

Hi Guys just wondering would the baby not have died only for the help of Juliet and since she wasn't around originally is that not room for the possibility of the introduction of a new character in the future. The flaw is that this idea wouldnt appear so dramatic as having a character we all know being named...

Posted by jk on March 12, 2009 at 03:40 PM GMT #

I hope they reveal who the baby is in the next episode and don't keep us waiting (although i suppose that is the general trend with Lost) Does anyone know if Mr Eko is coming back? He had a strong link to the island too

Posted by lostaddict on March 12, 2009 at 03:54 PM GMT #

I think the baby in question was born BEFORE whatever it was that subsequently meant death at childbirth. Maybe the "Incident" was the beginning/cause of this? Frakk! Have to wait an extra week for a fix.

Posted by Alex Weir on March 12, 2009 at 04:41 PM GMT #

I think the child could be sawyer, as he is using an alias and he could help name the child as he is respected by the dharma hippie

Posted by duncan on March 12, 2009 at 06:37 PM GMT #

At this point all makes sense. They've travelled in time? Why isnt it possible to be born in 70's and "go to" 50's on submarine? Seeing how Jack, Kate and Co. came back to the island..island of Darma Initiative..to the time they wouldnt even been born (some of them anyway)..Maybe channels that are opened to get to the Island sometimes "opening" time as well ? Lets wait till friday. See you all next week :)

Only started watching over the last two weeks, now I'm hooked.

Posted by John on March 13, 2009 at 11:23 PM GMT #

I'm guessin that the baby will be ben, he said ages ago that he was born on the island

Posted by gareth on March 15, 2009 at 09:11 PM GMT #

We saw Ben being born in a forest in Portland a couple of seasons ago.

Posted by gman on March 16, 2009 at 06:11 PM GMT #

Did Mick who wrote last week not mean will the new arrivals meet the old arrivals who were left behind like bernard and rose?

Posted by Dee on March 18, 2009 at 02:02 PM GMT #

Saw new episode. Wont tell you the name of the baby.(just not to spoil it to you). It starts with E. :)

Posted by Woj on March 20, 2009 at 02:29 AM GMT #

Is the baby Ethan? I bet it is but he looked a lot older than 27 in Season 1.

Posted by B on March 20, 2009 at 02:06 PM GMT #

Hey, if we want spoliers we'll ask for them. Thanks for ruining that for everyone. Same time next week then?
