Lost '316' - Episode 6

A great 'Lost' weekThey're back. Opening just as the first ever episode of 'Lost' did, this week's '316' landed Jack right back where he started from. Sky gazing, momentarily lost, it wasn't long before the former hero was back doing what he does best and saving lives. First Hurley and then Kate and perhaps he'll have to do the same for Sayid, Sun and Ben (have a feeling we need him to stick around).

Where's Your Mama Gone?
Where is Aaron now and what did Kate do with him? I think she may have left him with Claire's mum but that doesn't explain how traumatised she looked. In fact she looked more scared than traumatised. What could possibly have made her give Aaron up and return to the island and does it have anything to do with Ben's injuries? Perhaps she wants to find out if Claire is still alive (rumour has it that she'll return for Seasons Six and Seven) and return her safely to her mother and son.

Joyce
Talking Ben, funny how no one on board asked about his injuries. It's as if they a) are used to seeing him in that state and b) know he did something to deserve a them. Why would Ben buy Joyce's 'Ulysses' to read on board, what he knows is going to be a short flight? Muppet.

Lost Locke
Was Locke's 'suicide note' a love or hate filled one? Perhaps he meant that Jack could have saved himself a lot of pain and drug use if Michael Emerson as Ben manages to keep us guessing.he'd listened to him and stayed on the island. However Jack is taking it to mean that Locke killed himself because of his lack of faith. Just as Mrs. Hawking believes the island isn't finished with Desmond, I think there's more in store for Locke too, thereby negating Jack's need to mourn?

Credit Crunch
The familiar time travel flash of light could have saved the producers a fortune. The two part original pilot focused on the very expensive, and time consuming, crash landing of Oceanic flight 815.The flashes have wiped out the need to splurge.

Narnia
I don't know why I didn't see it before or perhaps I did and forgot to mention it. There are enormous correlations between 'Lost' and CS Lewis' 'The Chronicles of Narnia'. Magical lands, time travel, mysterious occurrences, characters and now the 'Lamp post'. In Narnia the protagonists always start out from the lamp post and in 'Lost', Mrs. Hawking referred to her pocket of electro magnetic energy as the Dharma Initiative's 'Lamp Post'.

Leap of Faith
Have to say, it's pretty cool having our own eyes and ears in 'Lost' land with Fionnuala Flanagan. Her Oxford accent may slip into an Irish one but that aside, she is perfect for the role as mother of all time travel. She'll also ensure we think twice before Comparisons between Lost and Narnia are becoming more clearunderestimating the local church secretary. When Jack asked if Ben was telling the truth she astutely responded: "Probably not!" However her most important line of the night, which could be a direct message from JJ Abrams, was: "Stop thinking of how ridiculous this all is and ask yourself how it's going to work. That’s why it's called a leap of faith." Then Ben drove the message home with his Doubting Thomas pep-talk.

We probably could have done without the repeat of the opening sequence at the end, seeing as it was all we saw of the island this week but that's a small complaint in what was essentially a great episode.

Observations
The US army are sure to be back in the future as their 1954 postcard in the Lamp Post hinted. Looking back to the beginning of this season, when Sawyer and co robbed the kayaks they were filled with Algira water bottles. Me thinks that Jack and his posse could have unwittingly been shooting after Sawyer and his. It's no surprise that the dude Hurley is a comic book fan but his latest airport read 'The Last Man' was an interesting title.

Queries
Is that it with the 'Lost' numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 or will we need them again? Was Sayid in cuffs accompanied by a guard of the opposite sex, fate's (or Ben's) attempts to recreate Kate's circumstances on the original flight? Could the island turn out to be a living Will the island give Kate a new lease of life?organism which explains the fact that it's always moving? Hurley brought what appears to be one of Charlie's guitars back to the island – is it possible that the hobbit hero will be brought back to life?

Comments:

Does anyone else think that Ben went to fulfill his promise to Whitmore and take revenge for the death of his daughter by killing Penny? He was calling from the docks, so makes me think its possible. if Penny was dead that might make Desmond go back to the island, as I can't see him leaving for any other reason.

I like your thinking there C. The thought never entered my mind but now that you say it it could be possible. Would make for great viewing if it's true as Desmond wopuld really come into his own then...a man on a mission. Also, did anyone notice Ben calling Jack John in the church? I didn't get a chance to watch it again but it sounded very much like John. Any ideas?

I take it Locke's corpse will come back to life on one of the next episodes, in the same way Jack's Fathers corpse came back to life after the original crash. Interesting that the name given for Locke's corpse was Jeremy Bantham, same name as a famous philosopher and liberal thinker who was well ahead of his time.

Good to see LOST getting back on track...this was a great episode, moving the story along big time. As Jin is working for the Dharma crew, Jack, Kate and Hurley have landed on the island in the past...I suspect Sayid, Ben and co have probably landed in present time. I missed Juliette's knowing glances...hope she's in it next week. I have no doubt that Ben did something to Aaron to force Kate to return to the island...

Think the Guitar Hurley brought is gonna be the Guitar that Charlie found!

In relation to the numbers i.e. 4, 8, 15, 16 etc... was the way they were sitting on the plane have anything to do with it? They were spread out and I was wondering if someone was sitting on row 4, 8, 15 and so on or some other arrangement of that as I thought the way they were sitting was a bit unusual?

Is there going to be a season seven. i thought it after the next series which is season 6? I think desmond beat ben,

Good point CC...as the stewardess asked Jack if he was "Jack Shepherd, Seat 8 C?" before she gave him Locke's note. At least one of the numbers correlates to the seat number then.

I'm guessing Jack and co have landed in the same time-zone that we saw Faraday in the series 5 premiere, hence Jin wearing a DHARMA suit. It's gotta be Desmond who bashed Ben. The hint of course being him at a boat marina. Oh, and definitely only 6 seasons. I think Taragh has gotten too excited :-) That's allowed!

Hi all, thanks for all the posts, some great comments in there. Alex, yep slight confusion over the number of Seasons. There were originally meant to be Six but then after the American writers strike there was talk of a Seventh. Perhaps this is more of a wish then a reality. There are mixed reports on the web, if anyone knows for definite, drop us a line. Thanks, Taragh.

Hi Lost Fans I love the show the other night. Tell me how did u spot that Ben was reading James Joyce? I am amazed at the things people spot. Well done. I guess I am too busy reading the subtitles as I am hard of hearing.

The episode titles always mean something too. ''316'' could be be an allusion to John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life." AND.. 1.Des pushed the button every 108 minutes to keep the island from moving. 2.Because the island hadn't moved since Dharma/the incident, people off the island couldn't find it because- 3.Hawking can only see where the island is going to be, not where it is, so- 4.When Des didn't hit the button in time the light that lit up the sky did both move the island, bring down Oceanic 815. 5.Jin is Charlotte's father.

What?

JACK: ''How can you read?'' BEN: ''My mother taught me.'' Liar! Ben's mother died during childbirth. Remember? He saw a vision of her on the Island, during his hard Dharma youth. Ulysses mirrored parts of this episode and Homer's The Iliad. For example, the scene with Kate in bed lost in thought, then greedily kissing Jack, echoes the final chapter of Ulysses, Molly Bloom lies in bed, lost in thought, and chooses her haunted husband hero (Jack) over the studly beefcake (Sawyer). Another parallel: At one point, Molly's husband, Leopold Bloom, finds himself traveling in a carriage as part of a funeral procession. He is familiar with almost everyone, except one mysterious figure. Even though Ben might identify with Bloom, who also is grieving the loss of a child,he identifies most with the book's other major character, Stephen Daedalus. ''Daedalus'' means ''cunning worker.'' In Greek mythology, Daedalus is the famous dad whose ambitious machinations get his son, Icarus, killed. (Ben and Alex.) He is also renowned for building the labyrinth — part maze, part prison.

I think Desmond has to return to the island by boat. After all thats how he got there in the first place. He had left the room before Ms. Hawking revealed the position of the island, so he dosnt know to avoid that part of the ocean.

just a quick one, with all this time delay and people seeing each other at different times in the past(sawyer seeing kate when aaron was born) could there be a chance that JACk could also be known as JACob. Hence the connection with his father?

WOW. Lost has def returned to its former glory. This weeks episode was excellent. The one thing i'm most glad of is that we didn't have to wait until the end of the season/series to see the O6 get back to the island (or O5 as aaron's whereabouts are as yet unknown).... I can't wait to find out who is the driving force behind getting Kate, Hurley & Sayid onto that plane....whoever it was I presume they are also the one who beat Ben to a pulp...Maybe it was Whidmore....maybe he kidnapped Aaron, held Hugo's family hostage and framed Sayid for something....ooohhh the possibilities are endless.... Love this show.

Lost will definitely end once season 6 is over. There will be 17 episodes this season and 17 again next season and then thats it finished forever.

Taragh you could be right about Jack and co shooting at Sawyer and co from the boat when they were in the future....but I think it could be some of the surviving passengers from the tail of the new plane the people that Ben said he doesn't care about. Also delighted Lapidus is back i think he is a great character, he was meant to be the pilot on flight 815 and then ends up being the pilot on flight 316 ....unreal! Did anyone else get the feeling that Jacks grandfather Ray knew what Jack was up to and knows about the island? I thought it was a strange scene just to get some shows and don't start me on the coincidence that those shoes in the suitcase were Jack's fathers. Anyway I don't think we've seen the last of Ray. So many questions....its great!

Posted by Eamonn on February 25, 2009 at 04:21 PM GMT #

Ray is future Jack.
