Grey’s Anatomy - Now or Never - The Season Finale

So this is it. We’ve finally reached the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy and boy was it worth waiting for! Twists we expected... but with these twists the show’s writing team outdid themselves and left us screaming ‘what happens next?’ and counting down the days until the new season kicks off.

Izzie’s memory loss

I was one of the many people who got really excited when Izzie opened her eyes after the surgery and said that she had a headache, but it was just so sad when she started forgetting everything. You wanted to be mad at Karev for shouting at her to remember stuff but you could see that he was just trying to deal with the situation as best he could. And it must have brought back some horrible memories of Ava too so you could only feel sorry for him. I couldn’t even hate him when he blew a fuse and screamed at her because you could tell he only did it because he really cared. Old Alex might have meant it. New and improved Alex couldn’t have.

Bailey’s ‘intervention’ masterplan

I’ve always thought that Bailey was one of the best characters in the show and her ‘intervention’ plan for O’Malley this week was another classic example. I love how she calls everything like it is, demanding that Izzie make ‘sad, cancer eyes’ at George and telling Alex to do his ‘I was raised out back with the thrash-cans’ thing. How could George have said no to that intervention? How can anyone ever say no to Bailey? (Well, we know her husband did but shame on him. I felt so sorry for her when she bawled uncontrollably in front of the chief. It just seemed so real.)

Never forgetting the comedy

Even though this week’s show was a total tear-fest, the writers still didn’t forget the comedy which has been so important this season, keeping us going in spite of all the sadness and grim storylines. I loved the whole hugging thing this week. It just seemed so weird to see Shepherd and Sloan hugging it out but what was weirder was that it seemed even more odd watching Meredith and Cristina having a hug and hearing Meredith say that she loved her best friend and actually seeming like she really meant it. Also loved the little injections of comedy with Alex’s post-its to Izzie and his hopeful ‘did you forget yet?’ question after he yelled at her. And how could we forget Sloan’s reverse psychology of trying to play the girl in the relationship - brilliant.

The major climax... more tears and tissues

For the whole episode I was convinced that the bus crash patient was significant in some way but it wasn’t until the chief said that he had given George the day off that I finally copped that it was poor O’Malley lying on that table fighting for his life. And that moment that Meredith decoded his 007 message was just so sad. I want him to pull through (even though the character hasn’t featured too prominently this season) but I fear that it’s the end of the road for George. Could anyone survive an accident like that? And is there some truth behind the rumours that actor TR Knight is moving on from the show?

And what about poor Izzie?

I absolutely bawled when she just went all limp and lifeless in Alex’s arms after they made up. And then the dream sequence with her and George all dressed up and ready to cross over was just so sad. Fair play to the chief for dismissing her DNR. How sad would it have been if Alex had been left there trying to resuscitate her all by himself? I reckon Izzie will survive. Katherine Heigl would be such a loss to the show if she was to leave. And to kill off two major characters in one season finale would just seem too cruel, not that we know that George is dead but guess-work seems to suggest that he is the more likely candidate to leave, right?

I thought that the final note of the series was such a poignant one when Meredith’s voice-over issued the words...’it might all be gone tomorrow’. I can’t wait to see what the next season brings! Until then we’ll just have to tune in to Private Practice for our medical drama fix (same bat time, same bat channel next week!).

What a finale!!! I just thought they got everything right. I completely didn't figure out that the patient was George until he did the 007. Even though I am not a big fan of George, it would be sad to see him die. I don't think they will kill him off, but he won't be staying next season cos there is no way he could recover well enough from those injuries to continue being a doctor. Maybe he will get together with that girl who he saved. I think that Izzie will recover, like you said, she is a great character. You didn't mention Christina and Hunt, I loved Christina's speech. I can't wait for the next season. Oh and congrats on the great blog Linda, I really enjoyed it throughout the season.

What a finale? I expected Izzie but not O'Malley! Can someone please explain to me how Meredith knew it was George when he wrote 007 on her hand? Its driving me mad cos I know its probably really obvious.

wat a show.....well worth not giving in and cheating and watching it online i clicked it was george when arizona and calley were talking about how brave and awesome he was the next scene would always go back to the hero who jumped in front of the bus a fantastic twist as the build up for the last few weeks was focused on izzie wat an emotional rollacoaster I reckon george will die and izzie will survive when she was seen in the lift and the doors opened it was like george had already passed through the gates of heaven and it was up to izzie whether or not to pass through them too brillant cliff-hanger i feel the opening of the next series will be a funeral that they are all attending and we wont know whos funeral it is i really dont know if im going to be able to wait so long for the next season,by far the best tv show on tv this year def topped desperate housewives for me!!!

Oh! Dear! Jesus! I'm still reeling form last night - just watched George's scenes again and it's heartbreaking. Probably the best shock I've got from a tv programme ever!I had to be told about the whole 007 thingy though. It looked like George was already on the other side - Izzy was still in the lift so perhaps she'll go back to the "real life" floor. I echo C's above comment above on Hunt and Cristina, they are so, so good. Plenty of mileage for those 2 next season! Between Er and now Grey's , i'm an emotional wreck!!

OMG. Almost cried at the end of the episode. If one of them is going to die I reckon its going to be George. The fact that Izzie was still in the elevator kinda seems sybolic that she can go back but George is outside it so he can't

I was so excited about the final episode last night and I wasnt disappointed... My heart sank when Izzie started asking the same questions over and over again and poor Derek standing there all teary eyed and answering them over and over again... I'm so happy Christina got back with Hunt as I think they make a great couple.. it was 40 minutes in and I shed the odd tear but was waiting for this emotional breakdown I had heard so much about, and when the penny dropped that John Doe was George, I shouted along with Meridith it was a complete shock and a great cliff hanger, and poor Alex balling his eyes out while Izzie lay there lifeless did nothing so stop my tears... What a great last episode and I cant wait for next season...

Izzie will return next season but the actor who plays George has confirmed that he has left the show. There are official statements from Shonda Rimes (the series creator) on both of these characters. Check up the IMDB for the links.

I couldn't wait for the final episode. It was everything I thought it would be. I had sneakly read the episode on the series website. If I hadn't I would have been distraught at finding out that the John Doe was infact George. The episode was so moving. The love between Izzy and Alex. Grey and Derek trying to wed and making their own vows. Christina finally saying she loved Owen. I had a feeling Izzie doesnn't die. There was something in the way she looked at George as if she was returning. I will be sad to see George go. He was a gentle and kind character. I can't wait for the next series.

I was convinced John Doe was Mer's Dad, totally shocked when it was revealed it was George. Can't wait until next season

All I can say is...all episodes of season 5 were awesome! Can't wait for the next season of Grey's...it will take awhile, but I believe, it will be worth the wait. Until next season, guys.

I was screaming at the television towards the end of the episode. I had a feeling that the John Doe was significant but thought he was trying to tell Meredith that the girl he saved was some sort of psycho or something. Figured it out literally just seconds before Meredith did. Totally brilliant and am dying to know what happens next, but as my friend rightly pointed out, the writers probably don't even know yet!

Oh such a class episode, poor george, i will really miss him, even though his character has been very quiet this season, he was always my favourite from the very begining so im really sad to see him go. I defo think he will die and Izzie will live. Why couldnt they just have let him go off 2 the army instead of killing him off?? As soon as they brought in john doe on the stretcher, i had a feelin it was someone we knew, for a second i thought it might be derek and then i thought it mite be merediths dad, i kept thinkin who's not there that it cud be and then it hit me it was george and then i kept hopin he'd appear in a scene so it wouldnt be him! Ah poor Bailey too, she is such a brill character, i love her. I was screamin at the chief to hug her when she started crying. Until next season, how will we wait???

THe 007 thing is coming from way back in season one episode one where george is the intern picked by burke to scrub in and george makes a mistake and nearly kills the patient, then they call him 007 - licence to kill. He was never really called it after that (he redeemed himself well, rem in the stopped elevator where he does open heart surgery on a patient) but i suppose it just stuck in their minds

One word: Brilliant!

Agree with Audz above, I think George has already passed on and Izzy is still in between wondering whether to get out of the lift or stay in. He'll be missed though, he was probably one of my favourite characters, pity he wasn't given better storylines this series. The whole 007 thing was a fantastic twist and a huge shocker, Alex reminded us who 007 was at the start of the episode when Bailey & Callie were trying to round them up for the intervention. So sick of Derek, he's more McAnnoying than McDreamy and his and Merediths "wedding" was cringeworthy and sad!! What's with Arizona, she seems to be always nagging someone! Love Sloane and little Grey, I hope they last. Roll on next season.

I saw the finale shortly after it aired in the US and was traumatised for days afterwards!! Poor George :( The 007 thing was also mentioned earlier in the episode where everyone is discussing how they think George would fare in the army. I think it was Alex who said it. Thought the Cristina/Burke 'I love you scene' was great. It was just so Cristina! I'm really looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops.

One of the best ever episodes of any TV show aired by RTE. It was quality. Didn't like George, so don't mind that he's gone. So gutting to see Izzy 'die'. Very good television...much better than PrisonBreak was and Desperate Housewives is.

That was such a sad episode, but with brilliant moments of humour and great emotional moments as well. I normally don't like Meredith much, but loved her in that episode. Her wedding was so sweet and cute. Her declaration of love to Christina was just great. I think Hunt and Christina are my new favourite couple. Alex was great too and Izzie's arc was incredible. Personally I won't miss George, but I don't think I'd watch without Izzie. Please, please, please say that RTE will show next season in autumn and not make us wait (or resort to illegal means) until January.

How did Meredith know it was George from 007? What have I missed?

Posted by Una on June 23, 2009 at 11:16 PM BST #

Alex called George 007 earlier in the episode when they were talking about him getting killed in Iraq.

007 means licence to kill... I think it was in series one. I think george lost a couple of patients so they nicknamed him 007!!

oh my god, seriously seriously..what a final. both my favourite characters, cried like a baby, but i have to say that Grey's Anatomy did it again. So emotional, Its up there with season 2 final aka Denny. George looked so hot in the army uniform, sadly i think he's a goner, i loved izzie and george as bestfriends, its gona be weird without him......

Hi, sorry for the delay replying to all the comments (let's just say I could have done with the help of the lovely doctors at Seattle Grace the last few days, was a bit poorly... if I had to chose I think I'd like Alex to work my case!). Anyway, back to the finale - yes, it was brilliant. I also suspected that John Doe was Meredith's father at first, until the girl who brought him in kept talking about her knight in shining armour in such romantic terms. Also, brilliant point about Izzie and George in the elevator scene. Doh! It never occured to me that he has already crossed over and that she was holding back in the lift. So we're assuming that George is a goner then, right? I do love Cristina and Hunt (as well as Lexie and Sloan) together but I figured everyone would be sick of me going on about all the cute couples every week! It is lovely that they got their act together though. And yeah, I think they were referring to the licence to kill thing with George but I agree, it was a bit confusing, seeing as they hadn't referred to him as that recently, except for in the Iraq talk.

That had to be one of the best finale i have ever seen. I am glad for one that i did see it a few weeks before when it came out in the us cause gossip collums were ruining the spoilers. It is confirmed on E online that "George" T.R Knight will not be returing to the show but "Izzie" Katherine Heigle will be. But for how long is unsure as both actors have been difficult lately. the 007 refernce i am pretty sure is from an early episode, either sereies 1 or 2 of greys.

Can't really add anything, everyone's said it but I have to say something. This just the best in TV I've ever enjoyed. Absolutley pure entainment. I love every character on the show, and they are like friends to me. I will miss George, but now I realize it's probably been a good thing he's not been in the show much this year. It may have been even more painful to see him go! Brilliant.

Will there be a Private Practice blog to replace the GA one? ;)

Hi Patricia, sorry we have no plans to do a Private Practice blog at the moment. Sorry about that.

OMG!Such a brillo episode! Will RTE please repeat old ER and Grey's to fill the collossal gap? 'Cause you can't get ancient ER episodes online. You can get Grey's but it's better watching them on TV!
