Desperate Housewives - The Season Finale

So the season finale finally arrived, promising drama, intrigue and plenty of upsets. Unfortunately it failed to deliver on all of these fronts, ending with a cliffhanger that inspired very little curiosity.

It's all about Dave… much like every other episode
The face of innoncence... or so they all thought!!The Dave thing has been dragging on for many months now and, although it should have been dramatic, I found myself caring very little about the outcome when it came down to it. He came across as very sinister from day one with his fake smile and odd comments and the fact that nobody (well, except for Mrs McCloskey) spotted it just left you feeling a little like they deserved whatever they got for being so stupid as to be blinded by his sleazy brand of charm.

Poor little MJMJ was the only one who deserved the sympathy at the end of the day. He's young, vulnerable and naturally trusting… and let's face it, he's the cutest kid on the street so we don't want to lose him. But Susan and Mike and everyone else who spent a lot of time with Dave and never suspected anything inspired no pity. Don't get me wrong, I watched it hoping that Mike would save the day, like everyone else I'm sure, but I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat and everything about the storyline screamed 'trying too hard people'. Fair enough that one of the clues was discovered but for the cops, Mrs Closkey and Mike to all discover the truth within minutes of each other was over-kill. We get that Dave's been rumbled. It'd be no less dramatic if Mike was the one to tell the cops, instead of running with the most unbelievable sequence of events. Enough already.

Bree and Carl… So obvious
I'm sure I wasn't the only one who could see the Bree and Carl love affair coming a mile off. But it was still one of the few decent storylines in recent weeks. The way they sparked off each other was entertaining to watch and you were just left waiting and waiting for the inevitable to happen. I actually think they'd be very entertaining as a couple but they'd have to get nasty Orson out of the picture first.

Nothing by halves in the Scavo household
Baby news for LynetteIn another example of taking storylines too far, Tom had yet another mid-life crisis freak-out this week - this time deciding to enrol himself in college as a mature student, an alright plot on its own but too much following his string of recent hairbrain ideas. And then just when things began to get dramatic with Lynette fearing that her cancer was back… we get treated to another pregnancy in the Scavo household (hardly a new storyline there… but wait there's a twist… it's twins… oops, that's not new either - it just sets the scene for more over-the-top fiascos there next season… can't wait!).

The new girl in town
Not loving Carlos' new niece Ana. She's mean, is getting up Gaby's nose (and we like the new mature, slightly less materialistic Gaby) and is probably going to cause a lot more trouble in the coming season. Also, did anyone else think that she looks really like Leona Lewis when she smiles?!

The cliffhanger
Mike says 'I do' after playing the hero!I'd love to say I cared whether Mike married Susan or Katherine (or even someone else) but I just don't. This year's season finale was lacking in all the things that made Desperate Housewives great in the first place, that real suspense, the twisted plotlines and great character development. Basically it was a wash-out and I'm rethinking even using the word 'cliffhanger' in relation to that dismal ending. Let's hope next season brings a bit more activity and fun to Wisteria Lane.

Linda, I so disagree with you about the season finale! I loved it. I've been quite disappointed in many of the recent episodes but I really thought the last show hit the mark. Ok, much of it was predictable but I thought the storyline finally got the Housewives back on track. I'm looking forward to next season.

Linda, I agree with you all the way,so I have to write this up! I thought it was so mediocre, like something that belonged mid season, not the finale! You are right, even for DH standards, it was beyond belief (and I am usually quite forgiving of DH so thats saying something). The cliffhanger was worthy of about 2weeks of a wait, not until next season! I don't really care! After all the Dave stuff, I was actually dissapointed that the ending was such a cop out, I would have rathered lose another big character than the feeling of a wasted storyline on Dave. Oh well, DH has really let the ball drop and I held it in such high regard in Season 1...I keep watching just in case they pick it up. The only thing I loved about last night was the Bree and Carl storyline, that for me was a return to the old top form. Thank god for box sets of SATC, The Wire and The Sopranos!

How could I forget! I never listed Lost in my list of "thank god for" !! Just compare the popularity of the Lost finale blog to this DH finale blog, they are not in the same league! And that is not the fault of the excellent RTE authors...oh no, thats the difference between a tired series and a series on top of its game!

Linda, I really dont think your a fan of the show. I absolutely loved the episodes. I just try not to predict things and let them happen the shows are better that way!

I'm afraid I'm not for changing my mind on this one. I've always been a big fan of the show but I thought that this season was very disappointing. It just feels like they have run out ideas. What was so great about DH to start with was that, even if the storylines were a bit ridiculous, they weren't totally predictable. There were always twists and moments of suspense. There's none of that now. Even the brilliant characters, like Lynette, are suffering as a result of the weak plots. Bring back some of the mystery of Season One.

I'm with Linda. Last night's finale was fairly uneventful. I can't believe the Dave storyline ended like that. Although my compassionate side felt sorrier for him in the end then I thought it would. There were some moments of light relief which I enjoyed, Mrs McCluskey and her sister, Anna having the twins clean up for her and I actually liked the idea about Lynette being prego again but you're right - nothing new there. All in all, pretty disappointing although I did enjoy the series as a whole.

PS. It's true about the Lost blog being hugely popular but thats mostly because of the nature of a show like Lost, its all about theories and back story and everyone has their two cents. You can get that with a show like DH, as good as it is.

I thought the finale was probably the best episode of the current series and sadly that's not saying much. I stuck with this because ive watched it from the beginning and last season in particular did have some good moments but this show has definitely run its course. It should take a leaf out of Prison Break and finally put everyone out of its misery. With the way shows are being canceled left, right and centre in the US, i think if next season is like this one will probably be canceled. There was absolutely no suspense, the only character who even had the possibility of being killed was Dave himself. There was no way a little boy was going to be murdered. It was all so predictable and dull. I think Eva Longoria will probably go next, Nicolette Sheridan was right to go when she did she knew she was on a sinking ship.

Good point about the comedy Cat. There were moments in the show that reminded you what the 'old' Desperate Housewives was like... maybe they need to give Mrs McCloskey bigger storylines! ;) Also Aoife, you're right. The main problem with the episode was that you knew from the beginning that, after the death of Edie, it was very unlikely that another major character was going to be killed off in the finale so that sort of removed any element of suspense from the Dave storyline. Also have to agree with N's point about the plot feeling a bit 'mid-season'. Finales should be so spectacular that you refuse to go make tea on the break for fear you might miss a few seconds... this was nothing like that, in my opinion. I was almost looking for jobs to do around the house while I was watching it and that's saying something! ;)

I agree with Linda - the entire season was just average - I lost interest but kept on watching in the hope that it would pick up. Dave was a brilliant character and very tasty too! I'll miss him! Who cares who Mike married. There was nothing in the last episode that would inspire me to tune in next season. I think DH has had it's day
