Britain's Got Talent - Semi Final One

Ant and Dec - keeping the show running smoothly! So the first semi-final of Britain's Got Talent has seen Susan Boyle emerge victorious, guaranteeing her a place in the final of the talent competition. Hardly shocking stuff considering all the recent publicity surrounding her. What was refreshing about last night's show was seeing dance act Diversity progress to the live final. Too often dance troupes don't tend to do well in the voting and I was hoping that this would be the exception because these guys are really good.

Diversity… what it's all about
What the show is all about! Now I don't know that much about dancing (well, apart from how to have a serious, and very dodgy, boogie to some pop classics on a Friday night out on the town) but even I could see that Diversity are super-talented. To echo Amanda's point, their choreography isn't just slick, it's also really clever. They tell stories through their dance, and in the most seamless fashion. It's non-stop trick after trick and you just can't take your eyes off them. (Plus how cute is the pocket-sized dancer down the front of the group?).

Susan Boyle... let's get controversial!
Sorry folks, and I know I'm going to get lynched for this, but I'm just not feeling it for Susan any more. Don't get me wrong now, I was glad she got through last night. She deserves to be in the final but I just think that the level of fuss and hype surrounding her is out of control. Now I watched her first audition and probably felt the same thing as everybody else… I was totally impressed with her and I felt suitably guilty for presuming that she was just another delusional wannabe when she first walked out on stage. I thought 'fair play to her' because, let's face it, we all love championing an underdog.

Is the whole thing too predictable?!But…. Several major US television shows later (mentions on The Simpsons, South Park… Oprah no less) I'm a bit over it all. She's a grand singer but is she world class? Would we all still think she was brilliant if she hadn't told the stories about never being kissed or been too glamorous for a make-over? I wonder. I'm thinking back to Paul Potts. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember there being as much fuss about him and, dare I say it, he's a better singer. It just goes to show how someone can completely capture the public imagination and go from strength to strength as a result and, for all my ranting, I wish her luck. Opportunities like that don't come along every day.

The also-rans
A stroke of genius from Faces of Disco! For me it seemed pretty obvious that most of the acts that were placed in the first semi-final alongside Susan Boyle were placed there for a reason… Is that very cynical of me? I thought that a lot of last night's acts were pretty weak to be honest. Faces of Disco, Natalie Okri and Sue Son were alright. They didn't let themselves down but all of them were better in their first auditions. As for Darth Jackson (his backing dancers were better than him), Nick Hell (what the hell?) and Julia Naidenko (well, it was hardly belly dancing, was it?)… I rest my case. It would have just been slightly embarrassing had any of those acts gone through to the next stage.

Well done the judges
Simon always calls it like it is.It must have been hard to send Diversity through knowing that a little girl would be left in tears at the other side of the stage when the decision was announced but Simon made the right call. He wasn't nasty or personal but he had to send Diversity through. Natalie was amazing in her audition but the song didn't suit her at all last night and the styling and choreography just took away from her charm, which was in the simplicity of her initial performance. It's heartbreaking to see the little ones getting so upset on stage but it was the right result and you'd just have to hope that someone was waiting in the wings to give little Natalie a big hug when she walked off!

Comments:

Well apart from Ms Boyle's obvious nervousness, pitch & tuning issues for the first 30 seconds (which funnily enough the judges didn't pick up on), I'd have to agree. She can sing, no doubt about it, but if she treats us to another ALW warbler in the final, I'm going to scream! It goes to show how well these auditions are edited in the first place. Diversity were fantastic - should have been the outright winners on the night. Look at the clip of the final decision again - you can almost see the point where little Natalie's heart breaks. And instead of panning away, the camera zooms in at lightening speed for a close up of the tears. Yeah, that's it guys, show the emotion - look people, little girl sobbing her heart out - watch & be amazed & apalled at the same time!

It seems to me that it is pretty pointless to have younger people in the competition as they never do well. I thought Natalie was great they should have a junior version. I totally agree about the Susan Boyle overkill. If she looked like the belly dancer would she have got the same amount of attention for her singing especially when she was flat for the first few notes last night. I can't stand the type of "dancing" that Diversity do but I have be honest and say that they put on a good show. In conclusion there is a total double standard when it comes to acts like the belly dancer. She was a great dancer and obviously looked fantastic but woman don't like to see attractive woman get on well hence Amanda Holdens comments and yours. You probably think that the guy that auditioned in just a bare of tights togs and "danced" by throwing a girl up in the air a few times was a better act. I know that Amanda did.

I actually thought that Amanda was far too harsh on that girl Julia too. It just seemed a bit nasty for the sake of it, probably because Simon and Piers were falling all over her. Maybe she was trying to balance things out a bit and went a bit overboard. I actually thought that Julia looked stunning too but I didn't think it seemed like belly dancing really - but, like I said, I'm not a dance expert so I'm open to correction on that. For me it was grand, just not that exciting compared to some of the others acts. I agree about the children's version. Sometimes it does seem particularly cruel watching them compete against the adults and getting crushed by the results and comments.

I'm sorry, but Susan Boyle was terrible last night! So off-key at the beginning, and a bit forceful with the song throughout. I was curious to see if the judges would acknowledge this, but no.... I think Susan's worldwide fame has now put the producers in handcuffs.... the show will be more 'successful' as long as Susan stays in. But it could turn into car-crash tv, especially if she continues doing those flirty "Piersy-baby" moves ;-p

It seems to me that it is pretty pointless to have younger people in the competition as they never do well.???????? George Sampson won it last year... diversity were excellent. alot of hard work went into that performance. not gone on susan boyle at all.. think shes a bit annoying actually.. saying that i do think the best 2 went through

It's all a fix anyway if you watch it the one who performs last every night won it last year and it seems to be going the same this year. They know who's going to win and people voting are just wasting there money

I thought faces of disco should have gotten through. i'm well disappointed

I was so shocked that the little guy playin the drums didn get through i thought he was great the amount of stupid acts that got through was unreal its funny the first time you watch it but after that its annoyin. As for susan boyle i dunno what all the fuss is about she isn that great there is more people in the competition better than her. so glad diversity got through last night they were brill.... hope tonights show will be as good as last nights

I thought Diversity were absolutely fantastic. Their routine was slick and really imaginative, couldnt keep my eyes off them. Susan Boyle was ok but think she is over hyped and the general public could soon get weary of her.

It was hardly belly dancing was it?? How many belly dances do you know, or even have u seen?? As a belly dancer, those were belly danemoves. yes it was sexed up but that's televison.

Susan Boyle is totally overated in my humble opinion. She is an ok singer. Last night she was quite off in the opening and the judges ignored this however tonight Jamie Pugh was all over the place and they slated him. Don't get me wrong she can sing ok but thats it. If she was on the X-Factor she wouldn't last to the final. Diversity and Flawless for a dance off if you ask me. Incredible acts both of them. Susan Boyle should not win!!!!

It looks like the whole judging panel have jumped on the Boyle-bandwagon! There must be something in it for all of them from the US corporates. In fairness, I cannot understand why she got no stick for, in my opinion, a very very average performance! She's no Paul Potts and I hope the British public can see through the Hype and give the street kids a chance ie. Diversity and Flawless! They have done more to knock the negative impression the public has about British hoodie-clad teenagers than any youth lobby group!Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí!

Like I said, I'm not a dance expert so if you tell me that Julia's belly dancing moves were technically brilliant then I'll take your word for it. I still didn't find the performance that entertaining though.

i dont think susan was that good she was brilliant the first i think there is a lot more in the compition just as good . c ant wait for final.....

I like Susan Boyle but I think what happened was she noone expected her to be so good when she got up on the stage first. and all the publicity shes getting now is ridiculous, I don't think it will go in her favour. People will get sick of hearing about Susan Boyle.. I'm not sure she will win!!
