The perfect game for the NAMA generation.....

by Brendan Cole

Most Irish gamers will not have heard of the ‘Build A Lot’ series but in the current NAMA*-tastic climate, in which real-life property speculation is so difficult, its time has surely come.

You see, ‘Build-A-Lot’ essentially puts the gamer in the role of developer (booo!). Your goal, according to the spiel, is to‘become a real estate mogul and take over the housing market as you construct, upgrade and sell houses for huge profits! You can flip houses for quick cash or sit back and watch the rental income pile up’.

I wonder if ‘Build-A-Lot’ allows you to borrow billions and live like a merchant prince for a decade before watching the entire property market crash around your ears and then begging your friends in high places to take your ‘assets’ off your hands until they are worth something. At which point you get to start spinning the roulette wheel again.

Maybe not. Cos that would be ridiculous.

Money out before the bubble bursts....

Build A LotAdding to the fun, and realism, of this one is that each level is against the clock, meaning you have to get your money made before it all goes belly up (or something like that).

To be honest, this sounds like tremendous fun and should particularly suit the Irish psyche, which always struggled with the likes of Sim City. After all, Sim City rewards probity, long term planning and responsible management. No cute hoorism required.

It's the perfect present for the property speculator who has lost everything (but might get it back) in your life and the latest version is on the way on 18 September on the Nintendo DS!

* NAMA=Notoriously Anti-Market Agency? Try and do better in the comments folks…..

The 'Never Admit Mistakes Agency'...? I don't think the taxpayes should be liable for 90 billion bucks... And shouldn't investment like this effectively make all taxpayers shareholders? Meaning if it works out, we should be able to cash in on our shares and receive a nice payout when we're all back on the dole? No. Because the government says so. Nice guys!

How about 'Not Another Misguided Answer'. Or 'Never Ask Ministers Anything'.

This is suppose to be a Gaming blog. I can understand your attempt to be funny and reminding all of us about the economy. But projecting your own political views on here is a bit sad. I mean if we want to talk about a waste of tax payers money, then what about RTE? It's amazing that RTE is one of the biggest waster's of money in this country. Yet not a whole lot has been done about it.

@sensitive types, it's just a bit of fun....and I think you need to follow the news a bit more closely re: RTE!

@paul - that may be our new leader.

I have to say I am dissapointed with the standard of the gaming blog here, why cant you review or preview proper games like halo OST etc.

Posted by Ste on September 18, 2009 at 04:42 PM BST #

@Brendan, I think you're doing a great job on the blog, not too impressed with this one though! NAMA is everywhere already without having it on here too! I know you're a busy man, and dont get too much time to put your reports etc up, but just a suggestion. how about rte starting up a gaming forum, where we can all talk among ourselves about the latest games, while you're off doing the other bits of your day job?!

Has no-one else ever written a short piece of whimsy to keep things ticking over!?

Posted by Brendan Cole on September 22, 2009 at 11:40 AM BST #

@Jay - thanks, appreciate that. We're always thinking about what can be done and you're right, I've the rugby and whatever else as well as this blog! Thing is, comments/forums need moderating! The Gaming Blog will hopefully change/imrprove at some point - it's not doing too badly for what was originally a somewhat experimental change of direction!

a come on bren dont be so sensitive. i think if you had asked what the real meaning was the answers would not have been much different.
