Massive early sales for MW2

It is reported that Infinity Ward’s launch of Modern Warfare 2 on Tuesday has been a massive success in terms of sales. Figures suggest that it has broken UK sales records on the first day of release and we can only assume that it has enjoyed similar success in Ireland.

GameStop claims the game is “the biggest entertainment launch of all time”. On Tuesday it sold over 1.23 million copies in the UK grossing around £47million. The previous one-day record holder there was Grand Theft Auto IV in April 2008.

However it has not all been plain sailing since the release on Tuesday as servers went down for a time for PS3 players. Early reports suggested that the crash was due to the release of a patch but this later turned out not to be the case.

Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward tweeted on the subject "[Sony] are adding more bandwidth servers to meet MP demand. The Patch was for SP only." He later added when servers came back up "PSN Multiplayer should [now] be running at full capacity. We expect smooth skies ahead."

So how has it been for you guys?

360 Version. No real issues, 95% of the time the game runs perfectly online, though there's been a handful of games where you randomly glitch all over the matrix, but the session is then paused as the engine searches for a better host. The problems then resolve themselves pretty well. Not like CoD4 where you'd crash out back into the lobby, the game thankfully stays active. But yeah, smooth sailing on the 360 so far.

First off game of the year. Second off haha good enough for the ps3 owners servers going down serves them right.. Xbox all the way. FAR BETTER online service simple as that. I'd far rather pay 30 quid a year on ebay for a years subscription to a service that works. I cant understand people buyin a ps3 when theyre so expensive and graphically nearly identical to the 360. As for blue ray it can ask me, well you get the picture!! Happy shooting all.

The host migration is great, too many times I've been having one of my better games (usually I just get killed all the time) only to be kicked out back into the lobby. It's a more polished version of COD4 but thats not a complaint, so far the maps are good and the issue lag seems to have been some what addressed. Its game of the year without a doubt!!

Completed single player campaign last night and I don't think this game was near as good as Modern Warfare 1. The storyline is awful and I just thought the first game was more thought out and enjoyable to play. But the fact is most people bought this game for the live experience and, in the case of the Xbox 360 anyway, it doesn't disappoint (except for the lack of matchmaking in Spec Ops mode). The Deathmatch games are vastly improved and the variety of weapons etc. makes for an outstanding multi-player game. I know I'll be playing this game for months to come, but only online ;)

No Dedicated Servers. Does no one care about this?

Im sorry the ads on TV for COD MW2 look amazing one slight problem I always had is I HATE and i mean HATE First Person shooters my only Call of Duty game on PS1 was FPS is this more FPS?

MickMack, damn straight we do. Host migration on consoles is a stroke of genius, but if other companies start following their lead and withdrawing the servers the community for online multiplayer is going to be much less interesting as a result. ID have already said Rage won't support them - given how much mods and customisation were responsible for making Doom and Quake online, I'd say they've got some goddamn nerve...

The saint I'm afraid this is a FPS a very good FPS but an FPS none the less Campaign is very short but you get longevity from the special ops missions and online is very good

@The Saint: Yes it is an FPS, and quite frankly there is no better genre out there. It would suck big time if it was a 3rd person shooter.

The single player was pretty short, but I enjoyed it - I think the set pieces in the original.. the ship scene still & sniper level haven't been beaten, but overall it ruled. The multiplayer is absolutely disturbingly addictive.. never got to play MW1 online, but played World at war for a few levels of prestige & this is far far more exciting & entertaining. the amount of weapon unlocks is brilliant and varied. Also one of the maps was a modernised version of my favourite COD2 MP map which was excellent to see & amazing to play!

The calibure of this review site is highly dissapointing, nothing since the 12th! However the game is amazing despite the seemingly short one player campaign
