Heavy Rain is one of… next year's most hotly anticipated titles

Madison in Heavy RainThe bad news, for those who haven't heard, is that the release date for 'Heavy Rain' has been moved to early 2010. The good news - for me - is that I got to see two 'scenes', and play one myself, just the other evening.

How was it? Interesting.

Bit of back story: 'Heavy Rain' is intended to be a game that will take the player deep into a complex story which has multiple possible outcomes - so it is hard to judge from a five or 10-minute long preview. In fact, it will contain 60 'scenes' with completion possible in around 10 hours.

But even from the small taster, my initial sense is that the omens are good.

In the scene available for play, the player assumes control of an FBI agent who is on the trail of a serial killer. Investigation quickly turns to confrontation with 'Mad Jack', a large gentleman who would rather not be investigated, and the scene develops into a cinematic fight.

The fighting system is interesting. There are no buttons for 'punch' or 'kick' as such, and no furious button tapping either. Instead, the player is presented with options in the form of button symbols appearing on the screen. For example, an 'O' button could appear alongside your character's leg; pressing it at the right time - that meaning quickly - could result in your player launching a scene specific kick or trip. Press it too late, and it will probably be blocked. Fail to press it and the action moves on to the next option - most likely a quick block.

It sounds odd, but it fits and flows well - intuitively even.

The story seems to operate on similar principles.

Though the gameplay is 'linear' in the strictest sense - unlike, for example, the likes of Grand Theft Auto or other 'sandbox' titles - the player is presented with choices at every turn; you are being corralled, but only in a very general sense.

The other demonstration scene - the one I saw but didn't play - sees a second character, Madison, visit a nightclub where she had to use what can only be called feminine wiles to gain access to the club's inner sanctum was risqué, funny and inventive.

There are a huge amount of films, TV shows and games that could be described as 'influences' for 'Heavy Rain' - from 'The Sims', 'Silence of the Lambs' and '24' - but from my brief encounter, it looks like being unique, and could even inaugurate a new genre for gaming.

The goal of the producers is to engage totally different emotions from 99% of games currently out there. It has been described as a game 'about a father's love' for heaven's sake! If things go to plan, 'Heavy Rain' may even make you cry...

We'll have lots more to come from 'Heavy Rain' prior to release - with two new characters set to be unveiled at GameCon in Cologne in mid-August.

For now, the omens look good.

Anyone remember Farheneit (?) on the old xbox. Seems similar from a game play perspective in that certain scenes require different botton reactions. That was a good game at the time, if a little weird. I would suggest Heavy Rain is an evolution of what was a very orignal idea. The overall game play never quite caught on though as it was akin to using the dance mats but in your hands instead. Good timing resulted in the overall gameplay becoming a little simplistic and not really all that involving I have to say (recent bourne game also suffered from this). If you haven't played it, its available on download from xbox live.

Really looking forward to this game for quiet a while, been reading about it on PS3 mags and it looks brill and a bit scary too, pitty it been delayed, another game on the way that should be good is RED DEAD REDEMPTION, a open world western from ROCKSTAR, bit like GTA but with horses and coyboys, should be a laugh..

Brilliantly summed up, Brendan. You are a total ledge bag

"For now, the omens look good" Surely you mean *the forecast looks bright* Brendan? :D Loved Fahrenheit on the Xbox/PS2. Hopefully Cage just remembers to include an ending this time... Heavy Rain is one of a small handful of games that could be the tipping point for me to finally get a PS3.

Interesting one this. Its always nice to get games that are so different from anything out there at the moment, LBP being another. I like the pop up areas and the exploration side of things..kinda like CSI meets Broken Sword type mesh. On a totally unrelated topic, the demo for Batman AA is brilliant. Finally a decent Batman game, nice and dark too

Yeah....the forecast. The investigative side of the game COULD be very interesting if it's done right - hard to tell from one little play. Question is this: will you be able to make realistic mistakes and then recover from them. A game where you have to find the "one true path" won't work so well. Makers seem to be aware of this though, so hopes/forecast remains good.

I must say I've never heard of this game till now, but based on the youtube video i just looked at, it looks koala-tee! Modern Warfare 2 and Drake's Uncharted Fortune 2, however, look like the games of this year to me anyway. Bring it on!

The makers have said that even if the main character dies from your actions, the story will continue, which is certainly an interesting element, but hard to see it working realistically.

Hoping to have a look at Uncharted 2 at GamesCon in Koln/Cologne this week.....will be reporting back as soon as possible when I get back (Wednesday evening)! More Heavy Rain news on the way too - there are four main characters btw; don't think any of them are more prominent than the other per se, though the FBI Agent character's special skill (a CSI type investigating widget) looks pretty important to how the game will work. A very interesting project.....

It has it's good points alright! Having played both within minutes of eachother, my verdict is that FIFA 10 is miles better than the new Pro Evo, which has failed to improve or develop (yet again - ironic, isn't it!!!). Modern Warfare demo looks good but that's all I've got on it so far.....will have loads more up soon!

Thanks Bren, I used to love PRO EVO myself but the last 2 were very disapointing, I thuoght FIFA 09 was class and 10 looks just as good and the new cornor kick and free kick system should work and 360 degree dribbling which should give us better control.

Definitely picking up the PS3 Slim. I need another PS3 for the bedroom! Having watched the FIFA 10 demo online, the custom set pieces aer going to be a great addition to the tactics in FIFA! No more aimlessly crossing the ball into the box. EA have my money again this year, Pro Evo hasnt been the same since the PS2 which is a shame. @Brendan, GC 2009 is basically E3 for Europe, but only Sony seemed to show up and actually have great announcements and games to show off. What were your vibes from the event? Success or not?

Hey Paul - GamesCon was MASSIVE but yeah Sony were the biggest show in town by far. Should have a piece coming thru today on PS3 Slim.........lots of other stuff over next few weeks as well.
