Brendan Cole brings a round-up of gaming news

Playstation Move

Playstation’s next generation controller has been given a name – Playstation Move – and is on the way in the second half of the year.

The device will work with the already existing Plastation Eye camera and will contend with Microsoft’s Project Natal (due to be renamed) and several Wii Motion Controllers.

The Move can also be used with a supplementary sub-controller for two-handed action and a specially designed game is expected to accompany the device on launch. Here’s a basic demo. And here’s one that gives an idea of the Minority Report potential the device has.

X-Box Update

We’ve blogged before about issues with the X-Box but it appears likely that Microsoft will be updating the console in the near future and some of the issues that many owners have experienced will hopefully be dealt with.

Rumours emanating from China indicate that an X-Box Slim – matching Sony’s move late last year – is in the pipeline. Should be ready for Christmas.

iPhone hits specialist gaming platform

The iPhone is the gaming gadget de jour with Vodafone’s entry in the market and price reductions meaning far more people now have access to the Apple’s 3GS version.

So successful has the iPhone been that Sony and Nintendo have seen sales of their mobile gaming devices – the PSP and the DS dip as a result.

In the US in 2009 the iPhone had a 20% share of gaming, with the more expensive PSP taking 11% and the DS 70%. The PSP’s share had been most affected, dropping for 20% in 2008. The iPhone was up from 5% in the same period.

It should also be pointed that the iPhone v Gaming Platform comparison is not fully accurate. People who buy iPhone games are not necessarily potential PSP or DS customers.

Personally, my take would be that the iPhone is a reasonable games device but it lacks proper scope and a DS or PSP will offer quite a bit more.

Comments:

Will these updates to the Xbox console be available to anyone who has an existing Xbox, or will we have to buy a new one? I'm yet to be convinced by the motion controllers, I know many people who have bought a Wii and after the novelity of it has worn off, left it to gather dust beside the TV. The motion controllers might work with kids but as part or an older generation of gamers, prefer to be sitting while gaming instead of jumping up and down like a lunatic, but I'll probably give Project Natal a shot when the time comes

Hi Colin - looks like the XBox will be a brand new device based on a new design of the interior. Agree on the Wii - mine is rarely troubled. And the motion control thing is impressive on the tech side but......could controller/fingers actually offers far more potential for individual commands etc.

Not being a motion control gamer i was a bit underwhelmed by the PS Move. That said it will have support with proper games not games that have Beach or Party in the title. LittleBigPlanet should be interesting using PS Move. The iPhone is a commuters dream really. I have tons of great free and paid apps that i use regularly. The PSP needs a complete redesign in my opinion if it is to seriously challenge outside of Japan. Two analogue sticks for starters.

Agree with you about the Wii. Mine is gathering a nice coating of dust. It may soon be relegated to the cardboard box in the garage where old consoles go to die. I play my Sega Dreamcast more these days!

Apparently the Xbox 360 update will include USB support, for external hard-drives, for storing profiles & games & demos etc. - So playing media from an external hard-drive will be easier now, given that the .avi support was introduced last year - ALTHOUGH - apparently the external hard-drive support will only allow up to 32GB of space to be used... Which means that even if you plug in your external Terabyte hard-drive, your 360 will only allocate 16GB of space from it for itself, although it can recognise 2 at once, which means a potential 32GB extra. Which is a load of tosh. The 360 currently doesn't even recognise my Terabyte, it only recognises small USB sticks - so this update BETTER include capabilities to read from larger volumes. And to Colin, it's just an update you download via your existing Xbox 360.
