City Slang - 2006 – 63 minutes
However much Canadian tourism officials are spending on promoting their country, they simply couldn't buy the publicity that a number of their musical treasures have generated in the past few years.
Now it's the turn of Toronto's Broken Social Scene who - in much the same way that Montreal's Arcade Fire owned 2005 - could find that this year belongs to them.
Consisting of 17 musicians from various Canadian outfits (including Stars, Do Make Say Think and solo artist Feist), Broken Social Scene can be urgent or dreamy, tight or focussed but always with a joy in their sound that's infectious.
Spearheaded by Do Make Say Think duo Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, this an indie symphony of sorts that shows how lacking in imagination many bands are while also being accessible enough that no listener will feel left out in the cold.
Just like you thought all along: size does matter.
