Rough Trade - 2005 - 30 minutes
As revered as he is for the songs he has written for Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon, Mark Kozelek has also shown himself to be a superb re-interpreter of other people's material. In the past he has reworked Neil Young, Wings, Kiss, John Denver, Genesis and most famously AC/DC on the all-acoustic 'What's Next to the Moon' album.
Now Kozelek has turned his attentions to American indie outfit Modest Mouse and the results are as beguiling as ever and continue his proud tradition of never having released a poor album.
With his beautiful voice and guitar playing, Kozelek has the gift of making other people's music his own while also enhancing the reputations of his chosen subjects. 'Tiny Cities' is only half-an-hour long, but it is perfectly formed, the title track and 'Space Travel is Boring' showing Kozelek to be at the peak of his powers.
And every other song isn't far behind.
