Anti - 2002 - 51 minutes
A child preacher who became 'The King of Rock 'n' Soul', a 17-million record seller who also found the time to raise 21 children and become a licensed mortician and limo service founder, Solomon Burke has crammed plenty into his 62-year story.
But the latest entry is one of the best of all. Out of the limelight for decades, Burke has headed back to the studio, lured in by roots artist turned producer Joe Henry and a wishlist of songwriters. Taking tracks penned by the likes of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, he applies his grace and gravel to create a soul album that can square right up to any of the classics.
Recorded in just four days, Henry's glorious, unfussy work makes Burke sound like he's either the wisest man on any street or has found a portal back to the 1960s. It's got the highs, the lows and is guaranteed to have anyone wear out the knees of their pants in adoration. Don't miss out on this one.
