Emmylou Harris has long been a musical pioneer. From her earliest days on the road with Gram Parsons to last year's 'Red Dirt Girl', she has rarely done what might be expected of her. As a result, this 'Anthology' – a retrospective of Harris' seventeen year residency at Warner/Reprise Records – showcases a extraordinary range of songs, styles and collaborations, with her unique and haunting voice running like a silver thread throughout.

Collaboration has always played a key role in Harris' career, whether musically (her acclaimed Hot Band contained musicians who had played with Elvis Presley) or in her choice of singing partners. Several of these alliances are on the anthology including the tender-hearted 'If I Needed You' with Don Williams and her lonesome duet with Roy Orbison – 'That Lovin' You Feelin' Again'. The angelic sound of Harris harmonising with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt in 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' is a taster from the platinum-selling 'Trio' album, but if you're looking for the most heartbreaking of all her collaborations, check out her 1972 duet with Gram Parsons 'We'll Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning'. That's not on this 'Anthology', nor are later recordings like the Daniel Lanois-helmed 'Wrecking Ball' or last year's stunning 'Red Dirt Girl'.

Buy the 'Anthology' for Harris' middle years but don't let it be the extent of your exploration of her music – wide-ranging though it is, it's really only a taster.
