Mo'Wax - 2001 - 70 minutes

Mo'Wax hosts a moody rock trio? How times have changed. South (Joel Cadbury, Brett Shaw, Jamie McDonald) have been together since their schooldays - and on this, their debut, it shows - swapping instruments and styles as they move from Zep-style bluster to down-in-the-mouth acoustics and the edgy beats that made their label famous. The troika of 'Paint The Silence', 'Keep Close' and 'I Know What You're Like' wipe the racks with any of their peers but over the course of the album producer (and Mo'Wax supremo) James Lavelle overindulges his charges with a 70-minute running time which owes too great a debt to the double album heroes of days gone by. South can really play, whether they should play so much is the big question for album number two.
