Coronation Street fans have been promised "fireworks", with two "explosive" male characters joining the show.

The soap's official website says that Sean Ward will play Kylie Platt's (Paula Lane) ex Callum, while Oliver Farnworth will play Michael Rodwell's (Les Dennis) long-lost son Gavin.

Ward has begun filming and said of his casting: "I am delighted to have been given this unique opportunity to join such a brilliant and much loved show. It is a great honour and it will be a professional challenge to play bad-boy Callum.

"I'm very much looking forward to working closely with Paula."

Co-star Farnworth said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be joining the cast of Coronation Street.

"Having spent my childhood in the North, to be given the opportunity to return and work on such an iconic, popular TV show is a dream and feels like a natural homecoming. I can't wait to tread the cobbles!"

The soap's producer, Stuart Blackburn, said of Ward's casting: "Sean is already pulling off that holy grail of creating a character that, whilst dark and dangerous, also has a truly infectious charm and he's going to be a fantastic character."

Of Farnworth's, he said: "Sexy, confident, engaging and yet still with edge and depth, Oliver as an actor has got it all and I can't wait to see Gavin light up our screens."
