Downton Abbey star Jim Carter who plays butler Mr Carson is set to team up with his wife, actress Imelda Staunton, to record an album of First World War poetry with English folk band Show Of Hands.

The album, Centenary: Words & Music Of The Great War, is being released on June 30 to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Carter and Staunton read from a selection of poems by war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon along with work by Alan Seeger, the uncle of the late folk star Peter Seeger, to the music of the era.

Carter is a long time friend of Show of Hands and narrated their project Tall Ships in 1990. An extra disc on the new album will include a number of new songs from the group, and new versions of period favourites such as Goodbye-ee and If You Were The Only Girl In The World.
