Bradley Cooper is set to return to Broadway in The Elephant Man.

The American Hustle star will make his return to the New York stage after an eight year absence. Cooper last starred in Three Days of Rain in 2006 alongside Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd.

Cooper will play the deformed 'Elephant Man' (aka John Merrick) without makeup or prosthetics, according to Entertainment Weekly. The actor, who last week received his second Oscar nomination for David O Russell's American Hustle, will imply the character's deformity through physical movements.

The Elephant Man won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1979 and inspired David Lynch's film version in 1980. It was first revived on Broadway in 2002 with Kate Burton and Billy Crudup.

More casting announcements are expected.
