Matthew McConaughey beat off tough competition to win the Best Actor gong for his leading role in Dallas Buyers Club at the Screen Actor Guild Awards 2014 in Los Angeles last night (January 18).

The actor was up against Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Chiwetel Ejiofer (12 Years a Slave), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Forest Whitaker (The Butler).

Blue Jasmine star Cate Blanchett was awarded the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role honour, after triumphing over Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks) and Judi Dench (Philomena).

Lupita Nyong'o won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for 12 Years a Slave, while Jared Leto took home the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role gong for Dallas Buyers Club.

The cast of American Hustle were honoured with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, while Lone Survivor took home the gong for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
