Dennis Tanner is set to say farewell to the famous Weatherfield cobbles next summer.

It has been confirmed that 77-year-old Philip Lowrie, who plays Dennis Tanner on the soap, is leaving Coronation Street once again next summer.

A spokesperson for the show has revealed that his departure will come after a big storyline with his on-screen wife Rita (Barbara Knox) – although it is thought she will not be leaving the Street with him.

The show insider said: "Dennis won't be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return."

Lowrie originally played Elsie Tanner's (Pat Phoenix) son Dennis from 1960 to 1968.

He returned to the role in 2011, 43 years later, for which he was awarded a Guinness World Record.
