The best-selling author Tom Clancy has died. He was 66.

The American writer penned the classic thrillers The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and The Sum of All Fears.

His publisher confirmed that he died on Tuesday night in a Baltimore hospital but a cause of death was not provided.

Clancy was known for his intensely detailed espionage stories and a number of his books were made into blockbuster movies.

His book Command Authority is due to be published on December 3.
