Former Friends star Lisa Kudrow has joined the new season of ABC drama series Scandal.

She has landed a recurring role in the third season of the show as a powerful politician, rumoured to be named Shelley Meyers, according to Deadline.

Scandal's third season, which stars Emmy nominee Kerry Washington, will air on October 3rd in the US.

It is not known when Kudrow will make her debut on the show.

Kudrow previously starred in the short-lived HBO comedy The Comeback in 2005 and can currently be seen in Showtime's improv series Web Therapy.

Season two of Scandal continues tonight (Thursday) on More4 at 9.00pm.
