ITV crime drama Broadchurch is to be remade for US television by Fox.

The British show - starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman - followed the investigation into the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on a beach.

Broadchurch became a huge hit and the series creator Chris Chibnall has been enlisted to write the Fox remake's opening episode. He will also be the show's executive producer. The US version is expected in late 2014 or early 2015.

"Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute - which is exactly what we look for in an event series," said Kevin Reilly, Fox's chairman of entertainment.

"We love the layered characters, we've seen how well-received it's been in the UK and we're lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the US audience."
