David Walliams and Catherine Tate are to star in Big School, a new BBC One comedy series about "a dysfunctional staff room, unrequited love and interactive white boards".

Walliams plays chemistry teacher Mr Church, who has taught at Greybridge School for many years, while Tate plays Miss Postern, the school's new French teacher who has never actually been to France.

The cast also includes Life on Mars' Philip Glenister as Lothario gym teacher Mr Gunn, and Rising Damp's Frances de la Tour as principal Ms Baron.

Mark Freeland, BBC Head of In-House Comedy, said: "Led by David Walliams, it's an absolute privilege to work with such a brilliant cast and off-screen production team. Like my Latin GCSE, nothing can go wrong. At least that's what I thought at the time."
