Country music star, Randy Travis is in a critical condition after being hospitalised for heart problems according to a statement from his publicist.

The 54-year-old singer was admitted to hospital on Sunday in Dallas following complications from a viral cardiomyopathy, a condition caused by a virus that makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood to the body.

If left untreated, viral cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure.

Travis’ mother passed away with heart problems at a young age and his brother had a heart attack last year.

The Grammy winner had been scheduled to play a show in South Dakota on Wednesday which has been cancelled.

Fans have been offering messages of support including Lance Armstrong who tweeted: “Thoughts go out to @randytravis. Heal up soon my man! One of country music's greatest voices ever.”
