Olivia Colman has played down rumours linking her to the lead role in legendary BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who.

The actress - who stars in Channel 4's upcoming new drama Run and was previously in Peep Show and Broadchurch - was UK bookies' favourite to replace Matt Smith and become the first female Doctor.

"My brother sent me a text saying, 'Congratulations, they've released odds on you being the new Doctor Who' - which we thought was very funny," Colman said.

The 39-year-old added that the social network rumours had passed her by: "It's all on Twitter, isn't it? I don't have Twitter. It is all on Twitter, isn't it?"

She also advised Who fans not to "put any money" on her landing the part. "No-one's ever asked me about it," she said. "I assume they would have to ask me for it to be true."

Run starts on Monday July 15 on Channel 4.
