Rhys Ifans has been cast in the CBS Sherlock Holmes series Elementary.

The Amazing Spider-Man star will play Mycroft, Holmes's older brother, it was announced Wednesday (June 26).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ifans will first appear in the season two premiere, which will film in London.

In the season opener, Sherlock (Johnny Lee Miller) is called to London to revisit an old case, where he meets his brother, who he fell out with years ago.

However, Mycroft allows Sherlock and Joan (Lucy Liu) to stay at his home at 221B Baker Street, where the Holmes brothers are forced to confront their past.

Executive producer/creator Robert Doherty said of the news: "I could not be more excited to have Rhys coming aboard. I've always been a tremendous fan and feel very honoured to have him in the fold.

"Equally excited are Jonny and Lucy, both of whom have worked with Rhys in feature films. I think this is going to be a lot of fun for all of us."

Elementary returns on September 26 on CBS.

Ifans can next be seen starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Serena.
