Madonna has revealed that she was so exhausted at times during her recent MDNA world tour that she would regularly burst into tears before she was due to go on stage.

Speaking at the premiere of her new concert film, The MDNA Tour, Madonna told The New York Post that while she regularly burst into tears while on tour, she felt it helped her put on a better show.

The 54-year-old pop sensation said: ''I was a mess. I would have my bad nights, and I would cry and I would say I don't want to do this. Before every show, everyone came into my dressing room and . . . said prayers, and 50 percent of the time I said them, and 49 percent of the time I was crying, usually from over-exhaustion. But there's something about pushing yourself.''

Madonna ended her 88-date tour last December in Cordoba, Argentina, after performing for over 2.2 million fans worldwide.

The tour, which grossed over $305 million and was named the highest grossing tour of 2012, and Madonna was honoured with the 'Top Touring Artist' award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards last month.
