Rap supremo Jay Z has announced plans to release his 12th studio album next month.

Jay Z surprised fans during with a video message during the NBA finals in the US during which he revealed that he will be releasing a new album, entitled Magna Carta Holy Grail, next month (July 13).

In the footage Jay Z is in the studio working with contributors Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Rick Rubin.

Speaking about his latest project, Jay Z said: "It's this duality of how do you navigate your way through this whole thing... through success, through failures, through all of this, and remain yourself."

The album is his first studio offering since 2009's The Blueprint 3, while he released collaborative record Watch the Throne with Kanye West in 2011.
