Reese Witherspoon has been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming movie Inherent Vice.

According to reports from the Cannes Film Festival she will join a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson and Benicio Del Toro.

The film reunites Phoenix with Anderson following his Oscar-nominated turn alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master.

Adapted from Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel, Inherent Vice sees Phoenix star as pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello, who takes on a missing person case. The person in question happens to be his ex-girlfriend.

Jena Malone and Martin Short are also reported to have joined the cast, while Witherspoon's role has yet to be revealed.

She previously starred with Joaquin Phoenix when she made her Oscar-winning performance in Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line.

Inherent Vice is due to start filming later this month.
