The Wind that Shakes the Barley director Ken Loach is set to return to Ireland this summer to film a new feature film inspired by Jimmy Gralton.

The film entitled Jimmy's Hall will tell the story of Leitrim born, Jim Gralton, who is the only Irish man to have been deported from Ireland.

Gralton was sent to the US by the de Valera government in August 1933 because of his communist affiliation.

However, he was never sentenced and died in 1945 without returning to Ireland.

Loach travelled to Co Leitrim last week to scout out locations for the film, which is believed to start shooting in the late summer.

Jimmy's Hall will be produced by Sixteen Films, Element Pictures and French partners, Why Not and Wild Bunch.

Financiers include Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
