The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli has signed up for the forthcoming seventh season of Californication.

The actor, who is best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti in the HBO mobster show, will take on a major recurring role in Californication alongside David Duchovny.

Deadline reports that he will play Rick Rath, an "old-school" TV producer who has a key role in Hank's (Duchovny) latest scheme.

The seventh season, which will consist of 12 episodes, will begin shooting later this month, with a 2014 debut on Showtime scheduled.

Imperioli will next be seen in the upcoming Oldboy remake from Spike Lee and he has also signed up to play Dwight's (Rainn Wilson) sensei in NBC's The Office.
