After a successful pilot episode last year as part of the Format Farm, RTÉ has today announced that the ‘real music competition’ will get its series debut this summer.

After winning audiences over, it has been revealed that The Hit will return to our screens this summer giving fledgling songwriters a chance to have chart success with an established star.

Shot in front of a live audience, the chosen songwriters showcase their songs to the two established music stars with the hope that they will pick their song. The stars battle against one another and are under pressure to select one song they can turn into a hit. But ultimately it’s the audience who decide; when at the end of each show two songs will be released for download.

Philip Kampff, MD of Vision Independent Productions who created the format of the show commented: "Vision Independent Productions is excited about the prospect of producing the first series of The Hit in Ireland for RTÉ. Thanks to the support and encouragement from Warner Horizon in the US, Warner International in the UK and RTÉ in Ireland, VIP has managed to create a new format that goes to the heart of that unique experience - when you hear a song for the first time and you know that’s a Hit."

Tonyia Dowling, Assistant Commissioning Editor, RTÉ Two, who has managed RTÉ Format Farm from the start said: "Proof of the pudding is in the eating – Irish viewers and RTÉ got a taste of The Hit by piloting it last Autumn under Format Farm. Now we want some more! Hopefully international buyers will want a slice of the action too. After all, in international TV it’s all about finding The Hit!'

The Hit will be broadcast this summer on RTÉ One.
