Reese Witherspoon is in talks to star in new indie drama The Good Lie.

Directed by award-winning Canadian Philippe Falardeau, the film has been penned by former Boardwalk Empire writer Margaret Nagle.

Variety reports that Witherspoon is likely to play the role of a brash American woman assigned to help four young Sudanese refugees after they win a lottery for relocation to the United States.

Witherspoon will also produce an upcoming adaptation of Gillian Flynn's critically acclaimed novel Gone Girl, and was at one stage reported to be playing the lead, although Emily Blunt has since been linked to the role.

She will next be seen opposite Matthew McConaughey in the Jeff Nicholls-directed movie, Mud.
