There is speculation that Steven Spielberg could make a biopic of 19th-century Irish leader Daniel O'Connell after a movie was suggested to him on his recent visit to Dublin.

The Irish Examiner reports that Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan pitched the idea to Spielberg and his Lincoln star Daniel Day-Lewis at the film's premiere in Dublin's Savoy Cinema last weekend.

The Minister gave Spielberg a book about O'Connell, and revealed that the director had already heard of the visionary.

O'Connell's ancestral home, Derrynane House in Caherdaniel, Co Kerry, is now a state-run visitor centre.

Lincoln opens in Irish cinemas tomorrow, Friday January 25.
