Comedy: Mrs Brown’s Boys, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

As season three of Brendan O’Carroll’s hugely popular comedy begins, the recession is biting hard. But despite hardship, it’s party time in the Brown household as the family celebrate the baptism of Dermot and Maria’s triplets. A hypnotist is booked to provide the entertainment and an unwitting Agnes and Winnie are put under his spell. Meanwhile, Agnes’ kitchen is falling apart, but she soon discovers that’s the least of her problems when son Mark delivers some heartbreaking news.

Factual: Climbed Every Mountain – The Story Behind The Sound of Music, 8.15pm, BBC Two

Sue Perkins tells the astonishing true story behind the real Von Trapp family, portrayed almost 50 years ago in one of the most popular films ever made, The Sound of Music. The documentary follows Perkins to Austria to discover why Salzburg – the city where the film was made - seems to resent the Rogers & Hammerstein musical that put it on the map. She also meets locals with memories of Maria Von Trapp and discovers her astonishing drive and determination.

Entertainment: 30 Years of CITV, 6.30pm, UTV

Thirty years ago CITV was launched and changed the face of children's television. This is its story – told by many of the stars who appeared in some of its biggest shows. From Children’s Ward to Dangermouse, Art Attack to Knightmare, and the best of Saturday morning TV from Number 73 to SMTV Live and Ministry of Mayhem CITV, it’s all here. Contributors include Ant & Dec, Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton, Stephen Mulhern, Michael Underwood, Christopher Biggins and Matthew Kelly.

Entertainment: Dale's Great Getaway, 8.30pm, UTV

This is a one-off spectacular Christmas feast of a game show, hosted by Dale Winton (remember him on Supermarket Sweep?), in which three families of four compete in a series of challenges from around the globe for the chance to win one of three very different holidays. They’ll all be going somewhere whether they like it or not. However, only one family can win the Great Getaway and play for the chance to win spending money to take with them.

Sport: Superstars, 6.45pm, BBC One

Gabby Logan hosts this special revival of the popular sporting entertainment show, as 16 of Team GB’s medal-winning athletes from London 2012 compete for this legendary sporting accolade. The athletes’ versatility and determination will be pushed to the max as they participate in eight different disciplines, culminating in a grand finale featuring the classic Superstars event – the gym tests. Logan will be joined by Denise Lewis and Iwan Thomas, while Rebecca Adlington will act as a mentor in the swimming event.
