The wait is over: author Lee Child's iconic hero Jack Reacher has finally made it to cinemas.

Adapted for the screen and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall, the movie Jack Reacher is based on Child's book One Shot.

It tells the story of former military police officer Reacher's unorthodox investigation into a fatal multiple shooting.

While some fans have expressed their disappointment that the 6' 5" Reacher arrives on the screen in the form of 5' 7" Cruise, remember: it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Director McQuarrie won the Oscar for writing The Usual Suspects and also wrote and directed the excellent The Way of the Gun; here he turns in a lean, fast movie that mixes punch-up and procedural with some nice black humour.

Jack Reacher opens in cinemas on Wednesday December 26.
