Dane DeHaan has been cast as Harry Osborn in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel.

Director Marc Webb confirmed the casting news as Peter Parker's best friend on Twitter, writing: "Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board."

Harry Osborn, who is the son of Spider-Man's enemy Norman 'Green Goblin' Osborn, was originally played by James Franco in director Sam Raimi's trilogy.

It is unclear how Harry will be portrayed in Webb's Marvel sequel, as the character has a long and complicated history with Peter Parker in the comics.

DeHaan has appeared in the feature films Chronicle and Lawless and HBO's TV series In Treatment.

He joins the returning Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, as well as Shailene Woodley, who will play Parker's great love Mary Jane Watson.

Jamie Foxx has been linked to the role of villain Electro.

Sony announced that the sequel will be released in May 2014.
