Homeland has been renewed for a third season by Showtime.

The US network has ordered 12 more episodes of the drama, which are set to air in 2013.

The second season of the show, which stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes, has been attracting higher ratings with each episode. The latest was watched by 1.75m viewers in the US.

Homeland also recently won top awards at the Primetime Emmys, including Lead Actor for Lewis, Lead Actress for Danes and Outstanding Drama.

Showtime President David Nevins said: "The Emmy wins for Homeland have certainly set the stage for a great second season.

"The writers, cast and crew of Homeland continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful rollercoaster ride, growing audiences week after week."
