Reese Witherspoon is developing a modern-day version of Great Expectations for US network The CW, it has been reported.

The actress will produce a contemporary take on the classic Charles Dickens novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The update - which has been simply named Expectations - is set to follow a small-town girl who moves to San Francisco, but struggles to realise her dreams until a mysterious benefactor steps in to help.

J Mills Goodloe will script the hour-long drama and executive produce alongside Witherspoon.

Previous adaptations of the story include a 1946 film version starring Alec Guinness and John Mills, a 1998 update with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke and a three-part BBC serial starting Ray Winstone and Gillian Anderson last year.
