Auditions for the next series of American Idol had to be called to a halt after an argument broke out between new judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, according to a report.

TMZ is reporting that producers for American Idol were forced to end filming for the day on Tuesday (October 2) after a expletive-filled row broke out between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.

The two superstars apparently fell-out over a contestant who tried out for the hit US talent contest.

In a video clip obtained by TMZ.com, a furious Minaj can be seen shouting and swearing at the Hero singer telling producers: "I told them, I'm not f*****' putting up with her f*****' highness over there." Watch the clip here.

Carey can be seen beginning to argue back while Keith Urban, who was sitting between the warring pair and Randy Jackson, try to calm the situation.

According to TMZ.com the show's bosses decided to call it a day so that both ladies could calm down.
